I would not be exaggerating if i call VITAMIN-C as PANACEA for all diseases.I am a medical practioneer from INDIA who has done extensive research on this favourite vitamin of mine.
VITAMIN-C has always been on my prescription cause it does have an ineffable role in boosting immune mechanisms.
THE HISTORY:VITAMIN-C was first brought in to use by the british.The
discovery was however accidental.A british doctor who was attending a group of sailors on a ship came across a strange disease of the gums,
which is now called SCURVY.He tried out the citrus fruit on them and to his surprise found that it miraculously cured that disease.Later experiments on the fruit revealed that it contained vitamin-c.Since then extensive research has been performed on this vitamin and it's immaculate uses have been put before the public.Everyday the researchers come up with a new advantage of this vitamin.Now it is being advised that it is better to have this vitamin as a daily supplement to your diet
THE R.D.A :The required minimum daily dosage of vitamin-c according to w.h.o recommendations is 60mg to 100mg.I would advise that this vitamin be taken atleast in dosage of 250 to 500 mg per day.This vitamin is a water soluble vitamin and is not stored in the body.The moment the ascorbic acid levels rise in the plasma above the required levels it immediately gets excreted in the urine.Hence this can be regarded as a relatively safe vitamin when compared to other vitamins which are fat soluble like A,D,E,K.
THE USES:Uses of vitamin c are plenty.It serves as an anti-oxidant.
An ANTI-OXIDANT is a substance that reduces some harmful free-radicals in the body.In most of the metabolic processes in the body free radicals are released.These free radicals are also produced in the body on exposure to sun's ultraviolet rays.These free radicals have been implicated in a variety of diseases like cancer{carcinoma},atherosclerosis e.t.c.
Another vitamin that serves as an anti oxidant is vitaminA.These two vitamins given in good amounts everyday can prevent cancer.The anti-oxidant properties of vitamin-c are maximum when taken in a daily dosage of one gram.
VITAMIN-C also serves as an immune-booster i.e.,it strengthens the body's resistance against various harmful agents.For this reason it can be used in various allergies,viral infections and to promote quick healing.
VITAMIN-C also helps in promoting COLLAGEN synthesis in the body.COLLAGEN is a substance that is required for healing of the
wounds.For this reason vitamin-c is frequently recommended for quick healing of the wounds.
Recent researches also claim that this vitamin delay aging.Imagine remaining young forever.This advantage of vitamin-c is not clearly established, but this seems to have a good basis.Being an anti-oxidant it
can be implicated in delayed aging process.
VITAMIN-C reduces the harmful cholesterol in the body.There are two types of cholesterol THE L.D.L{BAD CHOLESTEROL} AND THE H.D.L{GOOD CHOLESTEROL}.The l.d.l cholesterol promotes atherosclerosis and hence aggravates the incidence of ischaemic heart disease and heart attacks.The h.d.l cholesterol reduces the heart attacks.VITAMIN-C helps in reducing the synthesis of ldl cholesterl.Thus it can be recommended in atherosclerosis and prevention of ischaemic heart disease.
THE ADVERSE EFFECTS:Remember too much of anything is bad for health.
Though vitamin-c is considered as a relatively safe vitamin,if taken in excessive amounts can cause renal calculi{kidney stone} and GOUT{a disease of joints that occurs due to uric acid deposition}.The commonest side effects are diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.It can also cause gastritis if taken in high amounts.But all these occur only in doses above 5-6 grams per day.
VITAMIN-C RICH DIET:vitamin -c is found in all fresh vegetables and fruits.Fruits of citrus family are highly rich in this.GUAVA is said to have the highest content of vitamin c among all the diets.other fruits are lemon,orange e.t.c.For those who find it difficult to include this fruits in their daily diet can take a vitamin-c supplement of 250-500mg per day.vitamin c is available in the market as sodium ascorbate crystals or as ascorbic acid.One pound of vitamin-c costs you around $20.
