Pros: Easy to swallow, no side effects, absorbed by the body
Cons: Harder to find
I love my doctor! She stays on top of natural treatments and uses complementary medicine along with Western medicine. A couple years ago she ordered a bone scan to see how healthy my bones were, and we learned I have significant bone loss, a condition called osteopenia.
She tested my vitamin D levels and said I was low, so after some trial and error we settled on a dosage of 5000 IU daily. My doctor told me that all cancer patients have one thing in common ... they are low in vitamin D. This vitamin helps the immune system and is very important to the body, and D3 is the natural not the synthetic form of the vitamin.
Most of the supplements she suggests I take are bio-available, but they can be harder to find. In fact, I rarely see this claim on labels of nutritional supplement, so I did some research on what bio-available actually means. The women to women website has an excellent article on vitamins, and this is what they have to say:
"Not everything we swallow is absorbed by our bodies. Every nutrient has to survive the chemicals and turmoil of the digestive system, be absorbed through the intestinal wall, and get past the liver to reach the bloodstream.
Scientists use the term bioavailability to measure what’s absorbed by the body absorbed versus what’s wasted. Unfortunately in ordinary multivitamins, a great deal of the nutrients don’t benefit the body at all - because they’re not bioavailable. The scandal is that you would never know that by reading their labels. The label only shows what’s in the multivitamin; it gives you no idea how much is bioavailable".
NutriCology sells bio-available vitamin D3, in the dose I need (5000 IU)! Each veggie cap also contains 300 mg of vitamin C. Vitamin D3 is important for the body because it also helps the muscles, blood sugar levels, and the neurological system.
These gel caps are vegetable based and they are easy to swallow (and I don't like to swallow pills). The 90 count bottle retails for around $20.00, but since it lasts for three months that isn't too expensive in my estimation.
I am now going to start searching out nutritional supplements that are bio-available. I don't want to waste my money on vitamins or nutrients that are not going to be absorbed by my body.
It's also important that I take calcium along with my D3, and since I've been on my daily regimen I have increased my bone mass by 12% in the hip area, and I've done that in just one year.
I was taking a product called Grow Bone by Vitamin Code, but it simply became too expensive and I've switched over to NutriCology and another form of vitamin C. So far I've been very happy with this product and if you are looking for a bio-available form of vitamin D3, this might be one to try.
