Remember when you had to get up and go to the phone to answer or make a call? Remember when you dialed, as in used a dial? Remember when if you wanted to talk "privately" you had to have a 20ft cord? Yeah, I do too so I'm glad I have this phone!
Ok, while I think that cordless phones have made a gigantic leap since their beginings, I don't think the 5.8ghz family is any better than the 900mhz or whatever we had before hand. I got this set of phones for Christmas. I like it alot. It's a great phone. I particularly like the digital answering system. Set up and use is a breeze with the automated voice that prompts you through everything. This is the first digital answering system I've had that the time is (and will be) correct. However because it's digital there's only 15 minutes of record time. Oh well, past 15 minutes messages aren't important anyway.
I really like the fact that this system only needs one phone jack. I also like that every handset is identical and has caller ID. You can program a directory of numbers, unique ring & names, etc., but you have to do it for each handset. So if you program your mom's number as a unique name/ring on handset 1 you have to do the same thing for handsets 2&3. No biggie for me though, this is a feature I won't use. You cannot talk on 2 handsets at once, which again doesn't bother me b/c we never did with the old phones. It is ridiculously easy though to transfer calls between handsets. This system comes with a full user manual and a "quick start" one which is about all you'll really need.
Other than that the VTech system has the same features just about every cordless phone has had for years. Reception is typical for a cordless and I don't see a huge 5.8ghz difference. I still notice a little static at the far points of our modest house and would recommend putting the base in a central location.
