ladymarlene's Full Review: Belkin (F5D9230-4) Wireless Router
There were several issues with this router and after fixing each problem another one cropped up, until there was no way to fix the last problem so it's going back after 2 days. Even though using the wireless assistant on the CD, it would not come up. I read forums and found out this was a common problem until firmware was loaded from the site. So I had to reconnect to cable access, load the firmware and re-try. It came up after I loaded firmware, however you cannot set security standards or whether to broadcast or not before the router comes up, and I live in an apt with many saavy computer geek neighbors and before I could change settings, someone was already on my network since their wireless "found" my network "within range". After I set the security and unchecked the "broadcast" option by using the factory default password (which is blank) wanted to create a custom password and after several tries, was able to pull up a screen where this allowed me to enter a password. I thought everything was finally ok, but when I decided to change the name of the network (so neighbors who had seen it "broadcast" wouldn't keep trying to get in), I could not login using my password. It kept saying "Login error!" and so I used "set factory defaults" and this did not work (kept asking for my password and factory default is blank/no password), pushed the password "clear" button to no effect, I physically reset the router by using the reset hole in the back of the router (no effect), I tried the "restart router" option and this did not fix it either, I restarted the computer, reconnected everything and re-installed the router and this didn't fix the "login error!" problem either! It's possible a neighbor logged in remotely using one of many 3rd party network software tools that allow you to remotely access common wireless routers (a dangerous thing) and changed the password - but resetting the router, re-installing, requesting to set factory defaults, etc. should have fixed the problem. Now I have a router that cannot be changed or modified in any way and one in which I cannot login. I called Belkin support and they just made me do all this over again, but no fix.
