The Same Case 2-1/2" Pocket Knife that Killed the guy from West Side Story

Written: Dec 19 '06 (Updated Feb 06 '07)
Pros:Durability, Quality, Case Craftsmanship
Cons:Smaller size makes it difficult to use, harder to handle because of this.
The Bottom Line: Still a Quality Product, just to small for my taste, even as a pocket knife.

Usually I am very happy with Case Knives and the quality of the products they produce, my major concern is the smaller size, which makes for difficult handling of the W.R. Case 2-1/2 1-Blade Pocket Knife.

Even as a very small knife it still has the Case quality and craftsmanship of each product that comes off their assembly line. The pocket knife may be small, but you might find it a good fit for smaller hands or younger teenagers learning to use this tool. The brushed steel look is quite sharp and overall looks cool compared to some pocket knives on the market today.

I laugh every time I look at the W.R. Case 2-1/2 1-Blade Pocket Knife. as it reminds me of that small blade in “West Side Story” that the guy got stabbed with and somehow died?

Specifications & Details

-Drop point blade, Locking Blade
-2 1/2" closed; Measured 4 1/2" open
-less than 1 oz. in total weight

Brushed stainless steel handle. Glazed finish Tru-Sharp surgical steel drop point blade. Back-spring lock release. Polished-honed blade edges.

Blades are stamped from high-quality domestic steel and hardened with precise heat treatment.

Quality

The construction of this knife has proved quite durable and withstands some rough treatment of both blade and case. Although the exterior of the locking blade shows signs of wear with visible scratches on the surface of the blade, the blade itself remains sharp and useful. I have a certain respect for Case knives as they are constructed in the U.S. by American workers whom take a certain pride in the product they produce.

Experience

The knife is extremely small as the blade is only 2.5 inches and it makes it difficult to get a decent grip on the handle. I find it difficult to use the W.R. Case 2-1/2 1-Blade Pocket Knife for tasks other than; cutting small fishing lines, some minor cutting if necessary, and any other small project where precision is more important than size.

The knife is not a toy, and Case knives are not intended to be used as hammers, chisels, pry bars or screwdrivers. These activities damage the blade, and render the warranty useless as abuse is not covered. I listed some of the recommended uses as I usually carry it on me during those activities, it comes in handy for cutting fishing line, and precise enough to whittle a small marshmallow campfire stick.

Maintenance

I use a steel polish to buff the exterior of the case, this will remove most of the unwanted scratches. As for the locking blade, sharpening stones work well in keeping the blade straight and sharp. For the locking mechanism I use a 3-in-1 oil and apply a small amount, which keeps it from sticking or jamming. I also apply the same oil to the blade and gently wipe it down; it provides a nice shine and nourishment to the metal. Taking care of the knife will ensure a long lifespan, where it may be passed on from generation to generation.

Recommendation

The Knife size makes it good for beginners and smaller hands, as they might have a better chance of gripping the knife properly. The locking mechanism is not overly stiff, so opening and closing the knife has proved fairly easy. In addition the durability and quality has proven good, along with the sharpness and thickness of the blade. The smaller size does however limit this particular knives ability, and similar to any tool, this may determine what it can be used for or accomplish.

Manufacture Information

"We warrant each and every Case knife to be free of defects in material and workmanship for the life of the owner, and we will repair or replace with a new Case knife, at our option, any Case knife that is defective. That’s how strongly we feel about the quality of our cutlery. Case does not warrant its products against normal wear or misuse."
