Wal-Zyr, the Same as Zyrtec Only Cheaper

Pros:works pretty well; easy to take

Cons:makes me really drowsy

The Bottom Line: For indoor and outdoor allergies, I highly recommend Wal-Zyr.  Just be aware it could make you quite sleepy!

When I moved to Florida going on two years ago, I found out that something in the autumn time of the year set off my allergies severly.  I'd been taking off-brand Zyrtec for it, and when Walgreens had their own brand, Wal-Zyr on sale, I stocked up with a 150 tablet bottle.

What it is
Wal-Zyr is Walgreen's store brand for Zyrtec, an allergy medicine that was once by prescription only.  The active ingredient, Cetirizine HCl 10mg is the same as Zyrtec.

The package I purchased was a promotional one that contained 120 tablets plus 30 free.  This allergy medicine is one of the more expensive ones, regarless of which store brand you buy, but when Walgreens puts Wal-Zyr on sale, you can get the best price around.

The bottle is actually quite small for 150 pills.  But then again, the pills are small.  The bottle stands at just 2.5" tall and has a child-proof press and turn cap.  The tablets inside are white oval-shaped and have a "4H2" stamped on them.

Taking
I have difficulty swallowing pills, but these are so small, they're no bother at all.  Just one is the dosage for adults, and is said to last for 24 hours.  Please read all of the instructions and warnings before taking.

Efficacy
I've taken brand name Zyrtec, and Wal-Zyr works just as well.  This kind of allergy medicine is said to work on both indoor and outdoor culprets, which is great for me since I have both.  For me, it works really well, I just have to wait.  If my symptoms are already in full swing and severe, it can take several hours to feel relief.

The more consistantly I take it, the better it works.  Taking it sporatically makes it take longer to kick in, and it wears off faster.  But if I take it daily during the worst of my allergy times, it works better.  However, I can always tell when it is nearing the end of that 24 hours.  Usually by 21 hours or so my symptoms come back.

For me, Wal-Zyr helps with sneezing, runny nose, and eye allergies. It doesn't always take it all away, but it sure does help!  Sinus congestion or pain aren't helped with this medicine, so if you have bad sinus problems with your allergies, a different product may be better.

Side Effects
Drowsiness is the top side effect associated with Wal-Zyr's active ingredient.  And that is so true for me.  But, the more I take it, the less drowsy it makes me.  After a week or so of daily use, I hardly notice it, but if I've not taken it for even a few days (and longer makes it worse), I feel the effects.  It makes me so sleepy.  It feels like I've been drugged.

Oddly enough, if I take Wal-Zyr at night, I wake up feeling very drowsy.  Even though the pill makes me sleepy, thus I should have slept well at night, I wake up feeling awful.  On the contrary, if I take it in the morning, I'm drowsy at work which isn't good.  So, I've found the best time for me to take it is right after I get home from work.  It'll make me sleepy, but I won't feel drugged in the morning.

Everyone is affected differently with medications.  For my hubby, who takes it nearly daily right now, he doesn't get drowsy from it.

Inactive Ingredients
corn starch, FD&C blue #1, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, povidone, titanium dioxide, triacetin

Cost and Availability
Wal-Zyr is a Walgreens specific brand, so that's where you'll need to go to purchase it.  They carry lots of sizes of packages, so if you just want to try it, you don't need to commit to a big bottle.  I purchased my bottle of 150 tablets for $24.99 which turned out to be a really good deal.  Just watch for them to be on sale, and you should get a good deal.

Overall Opinion
For my allergies from pollen, dust, cats, mold, etc, etc, Wal-Zyr works the best of what I've tried.  It does make my drowsy, but the more consistantly I take it, the less drowsy effects I get.  My hubby also uses it, but it doesn't make him drowsy, so everyone is affected differently.
