Oh, yes, this is the tent! Perfect for either car camping (it’s roomy!) or backpacking (it’s light!), we fondly refer to ours as Shangri La.
Designed as a 3+ person tent, it’s just right for us -- two adults (one of whom is over 6’2”) with plenty of room inside for any amount of gear and then some. And as a four-season tent, ours has seen its way through three-day freezing rainstorms up in the Berkshires, weeks of baking sun (and nighttime windstorms) down in the desert, and come home in perfect shape every time.
The big factors in choosing this tent (in addition to its space and light weight) were the two doors and the ventilation: Outside each of the two doors is a huge vestibule, and we’ve slept comfortably in all conditions, with minimal condensation.
Setting up is a little tricky, and can be frustrating the first time or two if you’re not familiar with Walrus’s “hub” system. Working this out in the backyard before your trip will prevent you from having too much trouble in the field, though. Once I got the hang of it, I found it as easy to handle as any other tent.
The rain fly goes all the way to the ground, and while it clips to the tent on the sides, it does require two poles of its own and stakes for the ends. The tent’s ventilation includes the “stargazing” vent on the top as well as two smaller vents low on each side. Each door can be zipped down to the screen panel, and the fly itself has two “eyelid” vents on each end.
Everything about this tent features good design, and I’m a tough customer. I’ve been impressed all around with this one, and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a good, all-purpose, all-season tent. Whether you’re car camping or backpacking, this one will meet (and exceed!) your needs and expectations.
