Warhammer 40k is a great game for people 16 or older that teaches discipline, creativity, and critical thinking.
The premise behind the game is strategic warfare in the 40th century between armies from different races around the galaxy. To begin playing you must first choose an army type and then buy the necessary amount of figures needed to play. Figures and models from Games Workshop come as pewter and/or plastic and requires the use of super glue, paint, filling, and sanding.
When the models and figures are put together it is a great idea for a complete read of the rules book. The latest version of Warhammer 40k is easy to understand and makes for a better game. There are fewer rules left up to personal interpretation.
Game play can take place on any flat surface though I would recommend nothing less than 3.5’x3.5’. Players decide on how many “points” to play with. This refers to how many figures and models each side will bring to battle. Each figure and model is assigned a “point” value. For example, a Tactical Space Marine may have a point cost of 25 while a Land Raider Tank is set at 250.
A normal game is usually played with 1000-1500 points for each side.
There are a number of game types ranging from all out battle to mission based objectives. Victory is decided by the rules set by each mission type. Players advance army squads against one another and resolve attacks and defense with dice rolls adding a variable that makes the game very interesting.
Another creative aspect of the game is terrain building. Using common leftover kitchen items like straws, paper towel tubes, and cardboard it is possible to build some unique terrain pieces that are set on the playing surface to help bring out the tone and setting of each game.
Playing Warhammer 40k requires more work than your average tabletop game but it is a lot of fun and a great hobby that can last for many years.
!! Parents: While this game does involve army combat it does not necessarily promote violence. In every game I have played the setting of the game takes a back seat to the possible statistical outcome of battle. Sportsmanship is very much promoted in this hobby and supported by Games Workshop in tournament events, in their stores, and found many places in the rulebook.
