bwyckoff1's Full Review: Sara Gruen - Water for Elephants
The fictional novel by Sara Gruen is one novel that while fluffy is an enjoyable read.
The background is the circus life and all the various characters surounding the small life evolving around the big top.
Sara Gruen has done alot of research to back up her characters. She takes the reader behind the scenes to glimpse at the trainers of the animals, the freaks and the hawkers.
The novel revolves around the Character of Jacob Jablonski , a young fellow who suddenly finds himself without the roots of his home and his parents and runs off to find some sense of belonging in the circus.
The book is a love story on many levels- Jacob finds himself in love with the star preformer- a girl named Marlena. She is the love of the horses that she rides upon at each stop along the circus journey. The other characters involve the small dwarf named Walter that he befriends, a seedy old man named Camel , Uncle Al, and August. One of the main characters is an elephant named Rosie-she is an abused elephant who reveals to the reader the torment and the intelligence level of the circus animals. My heart went out to this animal.
All the characters are interwoven in a tight story line that is an easy read. Although the story line is a light one- the book can be an entertaining novel and one that is easy to get through.
