Pros:Unique setting, quality writing, and an overall charming protagonist with imperfections.
Cons:Not enough pages so a bit of a rush at the end!
The Bottom Line: I hope this book finds its way into your hands as it did mine for it is a story not to be missed.
This book grabs a hold of you on page one and sweeps you off your feet until the end. It gripped me right through to the last page which not many books can do. When I was not reading the book I was thinking about reading the book.
I am not a reviewer who likes to give away the plot but if you like animals, freaks and murder all wrapped up into a love story this is the book for you. You do not have to be a fan of the circus per say, but more a person intrigued by a subculture with a class divide between the elite performers and an underworld of working men. You learn along with Jacob that you can't cross the lines.
Sara Gruen does a great job of writing from a male prospective. There were parts of the novel that made me blush so I could only wonder how red she was sitting at her desk writing it. Jacob's journey into adulthood upon a circus train is one that I will never forget.
Overall Water for Elephants is a great story. Well actually it is two stories, woven together much like a male version of Fried Green Tomatoes.
