| thevoid99's Full Review: We're In This Together, part 1 [single] by Nine In... |
(Note: This is part 1 of a 3-part review for halo 15)
When Nine Inch Nails returned in July of 1999 with the release of The Day The World Went Away single. It marked as a preview for the widely-anticipated double album The Fragile on September 20, 1999. Though the album's first single was an unusual release in comparison to many NIN single. Weeks before the album's release came the release of another song released as a radio promo for the song We're In This Together. With The Fragile already released despite a lukewarm response commercially with reviews delving from good to mixed. NIN decides to release a 3-CD single for We're In This Together as an imported 3-part single for fans to collect.
The We're In This Together 3-part single aka halo 15 is a collection material featuring two different versions of the song in its album and radio-edited version along with additional material and remixes leftover from The Fragile sessions. Released as an import in three different parts, it's a record that is geared towards hardcore NIN fans who enjoyed collecting physical products. Though it's not one of the band's great singles in comparison to other singles. It does offer some fine rarities for fans to enjoy.
The first track from the first disc is the record's title track in its album version with its fuzzy, droning synthesizers and soft, sputtering beats with dissonant sounds of synthesizers. The track becomes louder with its drums and clap-like beats with wailing guitars as Trent Reznor sings lyrics of despair with glimmers of hope. The song features lyrics reminiscent of David Bowie's 1977 classic song "Heroes" which includes a blazing chorus that features driving guitars and simple, mid-tempo beats from then-live drummer Jerome Dillon. It's a song that is one of the most accessible NIN songs with a simple structure and a wonderful, melancholic piano-like coda performance by Reznor.
The next two tracks come from the vinyl version of The Fragile. The first is 10 Miles High that is reconstructed by then NIN-engineer Keith Hillebrandt. The song is an eerie track filled with layered production from Reznor and Alan Moulder that begins with layers of distortions and warbling, bleeping synthesizer melodies with Reznor's vocals being distorted. With its melodic arrangements of synthesizers, droning guitars, sturdy bass lines, and hollow-like drums. The song features haunting lyrics by Reznor as the song intensifies with its dissonant, twangy guitars as it becomes this loud, rocking track with its fierce riffs and performance. With a break of distorted guitar plucks and riffs, it returns to its distorted, fuzzy chorus with Reznor's growling vocals with lyrics that are reminiscent to Roger Waters' work from Pink Floyd's The Wall.
The last track of the first disc of the single that also appears in the vinyl version of The Fragile is The New Flesh is a track with eerie sounds of droning synthesizers with buzzing squeals of tick-tock beats and Reznor's swirling, distorted vocals. Filled with lyrics filled with death, it later becomes this more melodic-driven, dissonant track of heavy bass lines and growling guitars which warble through the song's unique, powerful production.
(End of Pt. 1)
