| thevoid99's Full Review: We're In This Together, part 3 [single] by Nine In... |
(Note: This is the third & final part of the 3-part single review of halo 15)
The third and final disc of the record begins with the album version of We're In This Together, previously heard from the first disc. The second track of the single is a remix of Complication and The New Flesh entitled Complications Of The Flesh by then-NIN multi-instrumentalist Danny Lohner. Featuring vocals from The New Flesh with siren-like synthesizers and guitars of Complication, Lohner's mix is a deconstruction of both of those tracks. With its smooth, warbling beats and spurts of growling guitars with pianos and synthesizer swirls. The track features scratchy mixes on the synthesizers and vocals with melodic piano accompaniment. It's a fascinating track from Lohner who is one of the few personnel who made contributions to NIN.
The last track on the record is an extended version of The Perfect Drug from the Lost Highway soundtrack. With its swift, driving guitar track and Reznor's calm, smooth vocals filled with lyrics of despair and desperation, it features a drum-n-bass arrangement of fast, sputtering beats and warbling bass beats. With backing vocals from co-writers Danny Lohner, Charlie Clouser, and Chris Vrenna, the track includes Vrenna's loud, hammering drum tracks. With its blaring synthesizers for the song's chorus, it's a song that is a NIN classic though not one of Reznor's favorites. It features Vrenna delivering an amazing drum solo near its coda which is extended in its piano performance and vocals.
Upon its release, the singles were only released in Europe and Japan but NIN's hardcore faithful in the U.S. grabbed the singles where ever they can find them. Even if each single costed around $15-20 at the most. It was considered one of those must-have for fans that only came around for a while. By 2002, it was discontinued as it became a rare item for fans to find in their physical versions. Today, each single is ranged at around $50 via Ebay with the entire collection at around for $200 which goes to show the insanity and willingness NIN fans must've had in order to find certain physical products.
Though it's not one of the best NIN singles in comparison to the many singles from their vast discography. We're In This Together is still a good 3-disc single featuring rarities and remixes that fans can enjoy. While the physical versions are now extremely hard to find with all of three of them being considered collector's items. The remixes can be found easily through peer-to-peer sharing file programs. In the end, despite its moments of filler and high price tags, We're In This Together is a solid single that is a must-have for fans of NIN.
