My wife and I moved into a new townhouse community where no open flame grills are allowed. I've always been against electric grills. Every one I've every tried has been a disappointment. The biggest problem is that a 120V outlet just can't produce enough juice to get the grill hot enough to sear meat. I wasn't willing to go down without a fight so I started doing some research online and most of the reviews I read were consistent with my perceptions. It was then that I came across the Weber Q 140 Electric Barbecue Grill.
Weber Q 140 Electric Barbecue Grill 526001
I was very familiar with the Q line. My father bought one for their condo in Florida. It was the gas variety and he swears by it. One of my good friends also bought the gas version and I've had many fantastic steaks grilled on it. Given the reputation of Weber I thought if there was an electric grill out there that could get the job done than this might be it. Low and behold...it is a winner!
This grill is meant to be portable so it's not huge. It's perfect for a small balcony or terrace. The cooking area is good size, enough to fit 8 burgers at a time. If you need to cook a ton of food at once than this is not the bbq for you. I successfully pulled of a bbq for 8 people featuring burgers, hot dogs, chicken and steaks. That was definitely pushing the envelope given the size of the cooking area. You also have to be creative with your cooking schedule since there are some issues with heat retention, which brings me to the next area.
This grill does get hot!!! I had read other rave reviews online saying that this grill gets hot enough to cook a decent steak. I was still skeptical. I even kept the box over a week( my wife was not happy about this as she hates clutter) to properly test it out. I have to admit I was completely convinced I'd have to return it. I turned on the grill to max, waited the recommended 15 minutes for it to heat up and threw on a 1 1/2 inch thick cut of Filet Mignon. Hey, when you're christening a new grill why not use the best? To my surprise, as soon as I threw the steak on I heard the sweet sound of crackling, searing meat. A few minutes on each side and I had a great steak ready to eat. I must warn you that even though Weber has created a technological breakthrough with the design of this grill( it retains heat and heats up again after opening faster than any other electric grill I've used) it still looses heat very quickly when you open the top. If you like rare to med-rare steaks you might have to settle for a sear only on one side since the grill doesn't always have enough time to heat back up to give you the sear when the meat is flipped.
-ALWAYS let grill heat for 15 minutes before using.
-If you are hosting a party cook the steaks first. Leave the meats with longer cooking times until the end.
-Buy the Weber Q Grill Stand. This is a must with this grill unless you have a table outside to put it on.
The only negative comment I have to say about this grill is the fact that there are no side trays. The other Q models( except the Q100) have collapsible side trays to rest your food on and this model doesn't have them. Since its comparable in price to the more expensive Q models I feel it should have the trays. It makes cooking somewhat annoying for me since I always have to find a place to rest the food while I'm also trying to close the grill top quickly to avoid heat loss.
This little grill more than gets the job done. It's sturdy metal construction will definitely stand up to wear and tear. It comes with 2 disposable drip pans for easy cleaning. The grill grate is made of thick stainless steel and also pops right out for easy cleaning. It has a 4ft long cord, 189 sq. inches of cooking area and puts out 1560 Watts of power from 120V. Let me be real for second. Is this grill a replacement for a gas or charcoal grill? Absolutely not. However if you are in a living situation that forces you to find an alternative to an open flame than this grill does a fantastic job. I also love the fact that I never have to worry about running out of propane. The price was $229 at Lowe's, I used a 10% off coupon and got the price down to $198. Buy with confidence, if you manage your expectations slightly, you won't be disappointed.
