I am a long-time propane grill owner. However, none of them lasted. I purchased one grill after another and they rusted and fell apart after only a few years of use. My last model, a stainless steel Thermos model, still looked marvelous on the outside and the innards were completely rusted away. I longed for a Weber Genesis grill - but the cost was just too much - and, even though I liked propane for the ease of use, like most everyone else I knew that stuff just tasted better when cooked on charcoal.

While doing yet another scan of Weber prices on the web, I happened upon the Weber Performer. For less than half the cost of the Weber Genesis, I could have a grill which should last for many years, and the ease of use from the one-touch starting system (NO charcoal lighter required!!!!). I've now had it for a few weeks and have grilled on it almost every night. I'm completely hooked on this grill!!! One of the best purchases I have ever made.
The Weber Performer is expensive for a charcoal grill -but WELL worth it. It's a very well thought-out grill. The assembly was very straightforward and only took about 30 minutes - and I did it alone. I also ordered the Weber Gourmet BBQ System Sear Grate Set with my grill and the Weber Performer Grill Cover. I highly recommend both these items for those ordering the Weber Performer.
To start the grill, you load the charcoal holders and position them in the middle of the grill beside the propane burner. This burner uses small propane tanks (Coleman and Worthington brands are easily found at Wal-Mart in the camping section) and is easily started with the push of a button. Close the grill cover (making sure that the bottom and top grill vents are open) and let the propane burn five minutes or so. Thats all thats needed to get the charcoal started. Then you can turn the propane off. Wait another 10-15 minutes for the charcoal to get going nicely before putting your food on the grill. The temperature can be easily monitored using the very accurate temperature guage in the lid and can be easily adjusted by partially closing the vents. The nice cooking table adjacent to the grill is very nice for food prep, holding plates, etc. and is very nicely sized. It can easily hold 4 plates. There are four hooks on the front of the grill which can be used to hold cooking utensils (if they have rings for the hooks - of course, the Weber stainless utensils work nicely). There is a nice plastic bin underneath to hold charcoal and which can be easily accessed by folding it out from the side.
After you are done cooking, you can close the bottom and top vents and extinguish the coals. That way you can use them again next time - perhaps only having to add a few new coals on top. The bottom vent can be moved back and forth to drop the ashes into the aluminum pot underneath the grill. This makes for easy disposal.
This is the PERFECT grill for me. I am sooo glad I didn't spend $850 for the Weber Genesis stainless propane grill. Food just tastes SO awesome when cooked on charcoal and, with this grill, there is no need for charcoal lighter. It's just so easy with this grill!
It's very hard to find criticisms for this grill. The cost is a bit high -but the grill seems made from materials which should handle the elements very well, it's designed and constructed in the USA, and I have absolutely no idea how anyone could make a grill which would make charcoal grilling easier!
