I prefer charcoal for many reasons. Search for "charcoal vs Gas grills" to help you make the first decision. Then it's about function and durability.

My past 2 grills were large, made in china, and each lasted about 8 years, even with buying a new charcoal holder for them after 4 years. I paid about $100 and then a $20 fee to dispose.
Before that, I had a small weber that lasted 25 years. So after window shopping, I looked at the weber's and decided on the best charcoal grill they had. It was expensive, but worth the price. Have used it about 7 times now. Grilling is now great from start to finish - easy and quick startup due to a propane starting tank - no more burns trying to add charcoal for the 2nd or 3rd batch of food - no more dust all over me trying to empty the ashes when done - easy cleaning - nice tray for holding food and tools - and a handy charcoal bin. Also, it's likely to last another 25 years.
