Pros:light weight, inexpensive, easy to use
The Bottom Line: an efficient tool that does the job
Its neigh on to that time of year again and what can be more aggravating than a bunch of unsightly weeds and tall grasses ruining an otherwise perfectly manicured lawn? While some people refer to these items as an edger in addition to weed eater, coming from a long line of edgers I know the difference. This is a weed eater, or weed whacker if that is your preference, not an edging tool. If you wish to refer to it otherwise, have at it.

Gas or electric, that is the decision
While I know the gas trimmer is more efficient and longer lasting, its heft and size prevent me from owning one of my own. Add the factor of pulling that starter rope, hey, my arms arent that long. So electric it is. Do purchase an adequate electrical cord with grounded plug.
The Poulan SG12 has a 10 cutting path and an 3.5 amp motor. It has a quick snap spool replacement with tap-n-go line advance. The handle is adjustable and it has a holder to keep the extension cord in place. The line used on this trimmer is 065" / 1.65 mm. Weight of the unit is 3.5 lbs.
After plugging the unit into a viable electrical source, turn on the little switch and get a determined scowl on your face. Approach the offending weed/grass/scrub with the trimmer head at an angle and let the trimmer cord do its work. When your trimmer line gets a little short, just tap the head on the ground and it will advance the replacement line. Do try to avoid scalping the area which can promote erosion and run off.
Cleaning and maintenance
We too often neglect our tools. Tools of any type are expensive to replace. A simple wipe down after completion of the project will go a long way to keeping your tools as productive as you are. Make sure to observe before use each time the condition of the electrical cords involved, both the one attached to the unit and the one you are dragging behind you. Once in a while check the head of the unit to make sure there are no clippings clogging.
ALWAYS KEEP THE SAFETY SHIELD ATTACHED WHILE IN OPERATION. There is a reason for that shield, just ask your shin. Things can be thrown from the cutting head like small stones and pieces of bark that can do dire damage to you, your home, your pet or an innocent bystander. Please make sure children and pets are free from the area you are working.
This has been a good unit and has done its job. This unit has proven to be trustworthy and dependable. When it bites the dust Id be more than confident in purchasing another Poulan product. Personally I have whacked about all the weeds Im ever gonna whack and I am turning this chore over to my buddy Surg. She enjoys that commute with nature. After 8 years in the lawn care business Im all for commuting with nature by watching flowers grow and birds sing.
