mrcni3's Full Review: Mary Higgins Clark - Weep No More, My Lady
Mary Higgins Clark has been called the Queen of suspense and mystery. She stays true to form with Weep No More, My Lady and it is also one of her Best Sellers ever. The story is about Elizabeth Lange, a young actress.
The story starts in Lumber Creek, Kentucky in July 1969, Elizabeth is 8yrs old. She has a 19 yr old sister named Leila. The girls have to deal with a drunken mother and her boyfriend. Leila wants to go to New York to be an actress, but will not leave Elizabeth behind to deal with the boyfriend alone. When Leila walks in and catches the boyfriend trying to force himself on Elizabeth, Leila decides it is time to get them both out of that house. So off to New York they go.
When they get off the bus in New York, a man walks up to see if Leila is the model he is supposed to be waiting for. She tells him no, but that she wants to be a model. He tells her "his" model must be a NO SHOW and offers her a chance to do the photo shoot. Leila jumps at the idea, and they all go back to the mans apartment. While he is taking pictures of Leila, Elizabeth sits in the kitchen watching TV and enjoying a snack. When the photo shoot is over Leila asks to be paid, and is told she has to got to the modeling agency in the morning for her money. The girls show up the next morning at the agency, and the owner laughs at them for being so nieve and falling for the mans scam. Seeing the devastation on the girls faces, Min the owner sees potential in Leila and offers her a job. Min and Leila become fast friends.
Now it is Saturday, August 29, 1987, and Elizabeth is landing in New York by plane from Venice where she had been making a movie. The story goes from this point with the occasional memories of things past.
Elizabeth is back in New York to testify, in a week, at the trial of Leilas' fiance for killing Leila. It is really hard for Elizabeth to adjust and accept that Leila is gone. She is to meet with the District Attorney to go over her testimony, then have a week to prepare and also relax before the trial actually starts. Min calls and invites Elizabeth to come out to California and stay at the Cypress Point Spa, on the house, which Min now owns and runs. Even though the District Attorney said it would not be a good idea, Elizabeth agreed to go. She was always comfortable and able to relax at the spa. Unfortunately Elizabeth did not know that Min had other reasons for inviting her. Min had also invited Leila's fiance, in hopes of Elizabeth seeing him during the week, and realizing she made a mistake about him killing her sister.
Upon arriving in California, Elizabeth is joined in the limo by another arriving guest, Alvirah Meehan. Alvirah and her husband Willy had won the largest ever lottery in New York history. And was now 40 million dollars richer, and wanted to fulfill her dream of going to Cypress Point Spa. Alvirah was also undercover for a New York newspaper, to write a story about how the rich and famous lived while at the spa.
Once everybody is at the spa, all kinds of things start happening, including murder. With every turn of the page you believe a different person could have committed the crimes.
If when reading this book, you really like Alvirah Meehan, she can be found in quite a few of Mary Higgins Clark books. Always to write a story, and solve a mystery.
