Today I get the privilege to write about one of my favorite beers of any style, Weihenstephan Hefeweizen. This brewery has an amazing history that dates back to the year 725. This was the year the Benedictine Weihenstephan Abbey, the oldest brewery still in operation, was founded. In 1921 the brewery changed to its current name Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan or Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. Also since 1923 they have used the Great Seal of the Bavarian State as their corporate logo. Their website is packed with information and if you are so inclined check it out at http://www.brauerei-weihenstephan.de.
This beer is being poured into a Tucher Weizen glass. It pours a beautiful hazy straw yellow color with a nice 3 finger head that leaves a good amount of lacing around my glass. Fairly large amount of carbonation, as one might expect. Overall, this is a beautiful and refreshing looking beer.
The aroma of the yeast is what first gets my attention. This is closely followed by banana and spices. This smell is complex in that it is more subdued than other hefeweizens but I can detect the individual flavors much better. I can also find wheat and some additional citrus nodes in the background. Overall, the aroma is perfect.
When I finally take a drink, I am blessed with some wonderful wheat flavors up front. This is then followed by citrus flavors of lemon and orange and toasted malt that tastes like freshly baked bread. There is a slight amount of bitterness in the end and it finished relatively dry. Overall, this is an incredible tasting and refreshing beer.
This beer is one of the best weissbiers available in my opinion. They are able to perfectly balance all the different flavors to make a very drinkable beer. Perfect on those warm summer days when you are in need of some cool refreshment. This is definitely a beer you can drink more than one of and with an alcohol content of 5.4% ABV, you can accomplish this without falling over. As for price, my liquor store has the 16.9 o.z. bottles for $2.99 or a six pack of 12 o.z. bottles for $8.99. This would be a perfect beer to pair up with some light white fish or chicken and of course most barbeque fare.
