Pros: light weight, and easy to use. Takes the temp in seconds not minutes.
Cons: It will give me the E-4 reading a lot when there is no need to.

| SherLesa's Full Review: Welch Allyn Braun Thermoscan Pro 4000 Ear Thermome... |
I purchased the Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer after having my daughter. I had worked as a C.N.A at our local hospital for 3 years and using the ear thermometer on patients was so easy and handy, I wanted to be able to take my childrens temp with ease, and added comfort.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE THERMOSCAN
The ThermoScan thermometer is small in size and light weight. It only takes about 10 seconds after turning it on before it is ready to use. You insert the probe in the ear and push the button. In 2 seconds you have the results. And the thermometer will save the last 2 temps you have taken, so If you are on the phone with your pediatrician in the middle of the night, and you forget what your child's last reading was, you hit the memory button and it will show you.
I also like the disposable ear tabs that you replace after each use. They are very inexpensive to replace, and you know that with each time you change the tabs, they are clean for the next use.
My kids like the fact that I can come in their rooms, take their temps and leave without waking them up. It was so much fun waking them up when they are tired and not feeling good to take their temps, and having to entertain them for 3 minutes for the thermometer to get its reading, my kids would end up crying for 3 minutes because I woke them up, and I was unhappy because I knew I did not get an accurate reading.
There is a sticker on the inside handle that tells you what all the codes are for that might show up on the screen.
E-1 Therm. Temp. out of range...
E-2 Patient temp out of range...
E-3 Activation button released too fast.
E-4 Therm. Temp. changing too fast
E-5 clean lens, apply clean lens filter
E-6 Internal fault (I have never seen this one, and I have owned mine for over 3 years now.)
There is also a chart that shows what the normal ear temperature range for children and adults are.
0-10 years 97.0* F - 100.4* F
36.1* C - 38.0* C
11- Adult 96.4* F - 99.7* F
35.8* C - 37.6* C
What I do not like about the thermoScan
There are few things I do not like about it....
Every once in a great while, it will decide that it doesn't want to work, and you will take a temp, and it will say $-4, which means, Therm. temp. changing too fast. Whatever that might mean. It is very frustrating to wait 15 minutes trying time and time again, and there is no drastic change to make it say that.
You also have to have the probe inserted just right in the ear, if it is off just a little you will get an inaccurate reading. (I doubt the 82.7 I got off my son was correct) And I found that the probe was a little big, so I did not feel I was getting a very accurate reading when my kids were babies because it didn't seem like the probe was in far enough.
If you have children that don't care for the "old fashion" glass thermometers, this is the one for you. It is easy to use, you get your reading in seconds not minutes, and with the disposable lenses, you can use it one more than one person without having to soak it in alcohol.
If you have any questions about the ThermoScan ear Thermometer, call 1-800-327-7226, and they will be happy to assist you.
