A "Super Luxe" Cat Food?: Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken Canned Cat Food, 5.5 oz.

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Great ingredients; perfect amount of gravy; cat loves it
Cons:None - although some won't like the price
The Bottom Line: I really believe that this is the best cat food you can buy.
Our 6 yr. old male cat, Domino, had a urethral blockage in June and since then has needed to eat canned food instead of dry food in order to take in more fluids (since canned food has a lot more water than dry food). A friend whose cat had a similar problem recommended Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken with Gravy Canned Cat Food. I had no idea about canned food so I ordered this food online and hoped for the best. I'm so glad I decided to give this food a try, as it is fabulous cat food!
Product Details:
Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken with Gravy Cat Food is an all-natural, wet cat food that comes in a standard 5.5 oz. cat food can. It has a pull top and a light green label. Weruva's slogan is "People food for pets", which is a neat slogan in my opinion. They also refer to this food as "super luxe".
From Weruva.com: Give me an order of chicken breast, hold the veggies, hold the grains. In fact, hold everything. And while you’re at it, make it free of added antibiotics, free of added hormones and cage free.
In addition to the 5.5 oz. can, this food is also available in a 3 oz. and 10 oz. size.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Chicken (boneless, skinless, white breast), water sufficient for processing, potato starch, sunflower seed oil, dicalcium phosphate, xanthan gum, choline chloride, taurine, vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), nicotinic acid (vitamin B3), ferrous sulfate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, potassium iodide, manganese sulfate, vitamin D3 supplement, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement (vitamin B2), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), folic acid, vitamin B12 supplement.
My Experience:
I saw this cat food on Weruva's website before it arrived so I already expected it to look like shredded chicken breast in gravy. And that's exactly what it looks like. There's no mystery-looking stuff, nothing brown and nothing slimy or nasty. When I ordered this product from MrChewy.com, the customer service guy I spoke to told me that most customers who buy this cat food comment that it looks good enough for humans to eat. He's right - it sort of does. The shreds of chicken are different sizes with most of them being probably a half to three-quarters of an inch long. They are thin shreds and not too big for a cat to eat. The gravy looks like the chicken gravy humans eat and is pale tan in color and thick but not super thick. It thins down a bit when I microwave it for a few seconds.
Any food that I feed my dog and cats has to be free of by-products and preferably grain (we are working on becoming grain-free with all three of our pets' foods). When I read the ingredient listing for the Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken with Gravy, I was pleased. Weruva is rocking that first ingredient - boneless, skinless, white chicken breast. Now that's a great first ingredient! And there's no doubt that the white meat is there, because it actually looks like real chicken breast. I couldn't be happier with the ingredients!
The directions on the side of the can state that approximately one ounce of food per pound of the cat's weight should be fed to the cat each day. Oh Lord. That's a lot of cat food. Since this is a 5.5 oz. can, that would mean that my 14 pound cat should get almost three cans. He definitely can't eat that much. I don't know who made up those guidelines. Even at giving him one 5.5 oz. can per day plus about 1/4 of a small boiled shredded chicken tender, he isn't even eating all of that every day. I split his Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken with Gravy and his shredded chicken tender meat up between two equal 7 AM and 7 PM feedings.
One of the things I have to do for my cat is try to get more water into his wet food. The more liquids he takes in, the better off his urethral situation is going to be. Since cats are "desert animals" (according to our vet), they don't drink as much as humans or dogs do, so they need to have water in their diets. Male cats especially need more water because they have a longer urethra and need to be flushed out as much as possible. The Weruva is already very wet since it is basically shredded chicken breast in chicken gravy. But I mix in a capful of distilled water as well in order to get as much liquid into the food as possible. This food is great for mixing with a bit of extra water because it mixes well with the chicken gravy. Domino loves this food and loves the gravy - as soon as I set the dish down on the floor, he starts lapping up the gravy.
Domino really seems to like the Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken with Gravy Cat Food. I haven't yet seen him turn his nose up at it and he is always meowing for it first thing in the morning and as soon as we get home from work in the evening.
One more thing I like about this cat food: it's made in America in a facility that also processes human food. More and more I want to buy my pet food from companies that manufacture it in America.
Overall, I feel great about feeding this food to our cat. I'd like to feed this to our other cat too but it's too expensive to feed to her as well and she's doing fine on the food she's currently eating. I like that this food is natural and that the chicken is antibiotic-free and hormone-free. I haven't seen a better cat food yet and will continue to feed this to Domino for the rest of his life. I highly recommend it for any cat.
