Along with Darwin and Columbus, it sounds like Mendel would've been proud also!

Clearly I was severely misguided for making the suggestion. I have obviously trespassed on your prerogative as auteur to decide what is important to include in your reviews. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

I actually put quite a bit of time and thought into whether or not to list age level for a picture book, and the reason why I decided not to is a story in itself:
At a recent book signing, author Philip Pullman (author of the very adult-themed children's book trilogy, The Golden Compass among other things) was asked whether his books are targeted towards a particular age level. He said that he imagines the world of literature much like a large fair where dozens of authors hawk their stories, tales and fables. Under this scenario, he could not imagine putting up a sign saying, "Only people over 13, please" or "For children only" but rather imagines his story being read aloud and whichever group of people settle down to hear it will be his audience.
I believe that anyone looking to purchase a picture book would do well enough to inquire into Amazon.com or at their local bookstore if they believed from the sound of a review that the story might be too far above or below their intended recipient. Otherwise, I choose to list the types of interests a person might have that would allow them to best relate to a particular picture book rather than the age level. After all, I would almost never fit in the recommended age range for the books that I review.
That being said, Amazon gives Weslandia the Reading Level score of: Ages 4-8
Enjoy!

Very nice, sounds like fun! (Reply to this comment)

This sounds like a really fun read. I used to love books like "Robinson Crusoe" ans "Swiss Family Robinson," about creating a new home/world.
Just for the record, I usually look for reading level (age referenced) in a review on children's books...maybe page count, too. If you can't guage reading level, you might look at Amazon for how they age-grade it. No biggie, just a thought. Your enthusiasm and clear writing carry the piece anyway! :)
