Here's Mud In Your Eye

Written: Jun 13 '01 (Updated Jun 13 '01)
Pros:Inexpensive
Cons:Don't look very natural, highly uncomfortable, impair vision
The Bottom Line: If you really must change the color of your eyes, try a different brand, FreshLook Colorblends aren't worth it, you'll just damage your eyesight.

Yet again I have to agree with Magick Cat on these. I recently visited the local optometrist. After being given a box of Acuvue 2 contact lenses I went for my follow up exam. Everything was great, I could see fine. Well shall I say it, they too were promoting these Freshlook Colorblend contact lenses. Ooohs and Ahhhs over these. Wow they blend three different colors and the models in the brochure seem to pull off the look of these very well.

Lucky for me, however, my optometrist was honest, he said they would probably shift around a bit but that I should give them a try anyway. I said what the heck and came back a week later for a pair of grey Colorblend Contact lenses. The receptionist told me that they would take some getting used to but they would be fine. So off I went with my new pair of colored contacts. They don't even give you the opportunity of trying these on in the office.

When I opened the package, I took my first real look at these and said "no way." I could tell right off that they were not even fit for my eyes. On closer examination I could see the three colors, dark grey, light grey and in the center an awkward light brown. I thought blending meant that the colors blended together, not that you had three very distinct rings around the pupil. Well I was still excited to try them, after all I had spent money and time to travel down to get these.

So here I go...usually contacts are pretty painless and are easy to put in your eye, that was until Freshlook Colorblends came along. The first one I put in felt like dirt, literally scraping at my eye, it was really irritating and to tell you the truth I thought I had put it on the wrong way, yet I didn't, it was on correctly. On with the other eye... dirt again. I couldn't see a thing, my eyes turned red and watery almost instantly, I didn't have them in 5 minutes and they had already done damage.

I tried them again later and eventually they didn't feel as if I was sticking shards of glass in my eyes. Even though they felt okay, they didn't look okay. I took a good look and they don't even look grey, more like a greenish bizarre mix of brown grey and green. Besides the pain, the color, and the fake look, I couldn't see.

It's an awful feeling when you cannot see, I would squint, which would be a natural reaction but that was useless, I still couldn't see. Oh and yes, they do move when you blink, you'd have to be a zombie to keep these suckers in place. The only time I could see was in the dark, probably because the color doesn't make any difference in the dark. Hey, I didn't buy these just so I could wear them in the dark! Talk about a scam.

I've tried colored contacts before and I could see just fine, unfortunately that was so long ago I can't even remember the brand and I don't feel like trying any more contacts than I have to. I'm pretty happy with my clear contacts, at least they don't hurt my eyes. Forget changing the color of my eyes, I just want to see!
