Pros: Capacity, looks, speed, USB, external power supply, portability.
Cons: external power supply case is polished plastic which will scratch easily.
The Bottom Line: I recommend it. I have had no troubles with the two I own. They have definately paid for themselves by providing more storage on my network.

I am unsure why the MyBook is getting such a bad name. I bought two and use them to host data on my network for myself and my family. Much easier and cheaper than running my servers 24/7. I just have the two drives linked to my main computer and have them shared to the network. The transfer rates are awesome allowing me to listen to music on one computer and view pictures on another while watching video clips with little trouble.
They are not that noisey. My industrial ethernet switch makes far more noise. I have not used any of the included software however and that may be the source of the problems other people are having. Also having been a computer tech and seen just about anything and everything. I would imagine these drives are not being properly ventilated. If you want something that is even quieter and does not have a fan get a Western Digital My Passport instead. There are two downsides to a Western Digital My Passport compared to this unit though. Typically the storage capacity is smaller and it draws power from the computer. This unit has its own power supply which means less strain on your computer's power supply. But this unit is less portable and does have an external power supply which might bother some people.
I use the drive to backup important info and to keep me from having to store the same info on several computers. It is really useful to keep installs of programs I typically install often as well as keeping backups of drivers. It would have cost me far more in time and money to buy additional internal drives for my server, add them to the server, and to keep a big noisy hot server running.
