Having a back-up device is quite important when you are working with large quantities of data, and that is where a device like the Western Digital My Book Hard Drives comes in to play. They make it easy to save data with very little effort, and with drives that have such a large amount of space, it becomes easy to save nearly everything that you are working with. This review is of one in particular that we have been using that holds up to 1TB of information at a time, and can be used to schedule back-ups of your current system so that when the time comes, you don’t even have to press any additional keys.
The reason to get something this large is mainly if you are working with large files that you want to ensure don’t get either erased or damaged while on your computer system. If you have a number of pictures that you like to have on your computer, important work files, or a number of documents including Word or Excel files that you just want to make sure never get lost, a device like this will be perfect for backing up everything. With the ever-changing way we do things, with most people now doing their taxes on their computer, we continuously use files that we can’t afford to use and must be backed up in a proper fashion.
Setting up the Western Digital 1TB My Book will be the only (somewhat) difficult part of the equation, as it takes a few minutes to get everything set up and ready. It’s a plug and play device at its core, so once you hook it up to your computer; it is ready to have files saved to the drive. Once everything is plugged into your USB drive, it becomes simply another drive on your computer that have files dragged and dropped from your main computer on over to the My Book. It is just as easy as it sounds, and takes no more work than if you were saving your files to a flash drive or to the desktop of your computer. Once you know what you are trying to save, you can always go over to the drive and take a look at the contents to make sure you have want you want.
The best part about having such a large drive (1 terabyte or 1000 Gigabytes) is that you don’t typically have to worry about what you are doing, or how big your files are getting over time. Some will still have to worry about that if they work with immense data files, but the average user is going to find a drive like this more than adequate to store a lifetimes worth of computer files. Using the software that is included with the 1 TB My Book, you can schedule when your computer will back up its files on to the external drive. This is at your discretion, and the only requirement is that the computer be left on when it is occurring. So, if you want it done during a time like the middle of the night, you just schedule it and go. I like to have it during the day so that I can watch what it is doing (even though it’s technically not needed), but that is just how I choose to go about things.
The Western Digital 1TB My Book doesn’t take up a lot of space, and can be tucked in behind your monitor or even beside it. You won’t need to ever do anything to it physically, so once you have plugged everything in, you can tuck it out of sight. It weighs less than three pounds so that it is quite light, and when files are being backed up it goes relatively quickly. The whole process takes only a couple of minutes, and it allows everything to be backed up to the external hard drive. I save my files to my computer to have it in one place and I also use an external flash drive for the most important files, and finally I have everything automatically backed up to the My Book for safe keeping. It is an extremely easy process, and that is why I can highly recommend looking into purchasing one of these great external hard drives for anyone who needs to safely store all their photographs or work.
