Pros: Very effective in adverse conditions

Cons: Does go 'Out of Date' and hard to ignite.

These cost a dollar each cube but work really well. All you need is to scrape a sixth of a cube onto the ground and the firestarter will ignite these first strike. The result is a fire that burns for a minute or two. My only concern is once you open the foil packaging you need to use it within a few weeks. After awhile they won't ignite as easily as Petroleum Jelly soaked cotton wool balls. In adverse conditions they will light and give off intense heat. I buy generic brand petroleum jelly from the supermarket really cheap. These work better than household grade firestarter cubes and fit easily into your backpack. Carry some cotton balls and cheap household firestarter cubes as primary firestarters. Always carry waterproof matches and lighters.
