TrekBody's Full Review: C. S. Friedman - When True Night Falls
I was somewhat surprised at the previous review of what I found to be an excellent read.
When True Night Falls immediately follows events in Black Sun Rising, with some retrospective to bring the reader new insights into the past and into the characters we have grown interested in.
For me, the book was very difficult to put down, and I strained to slow down an absorb the fine writing and especially the concepts layered in the book. Friedman brings old concepts new life by swirling the mythos of vampires and zombies and ghouls into a new form, combining them with sci-fi and fantasy to reliven the undead.
The writing and concepts are intelligent and thought provoking while being completely entertaining. Within the context of the world she has created, these creatures again haunt our dreams, and the nightmares of the characters in her book, and bring believability into concepts that are "too silly" for us to believe any more. In that respect, I could say it is one of the best combined horror, sci-fi and fantasy I have ever read.
