Dinaker's Full Review: Billie Letts - Where the Heart Is: A Novel
I just started following alot of the books from Oprah's Book Club. This one caught my eye actually by the cover. There was just something about it that was homey and said,"Read me! I did just that in exactly a week. So the story goes..............
Where the Heart is by Billie Letts
Novalee Nation was a seventeen year old girl, 7 months pregnant, thirty seven pounds overweight and has only $7.77 in change with her. Obviously, 7 was not her lucky number!
She finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyh, Oklahoma. An hour ago, she was on her way from Tennessee to a new life in Bakersfield, California. Suddenly, with all those sevens staring her in the face, she is forced to accept the scary truth: her no-good boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens has left her with empty pockets and empty dreams. Stranded at the Wal-Mart, pregnant, she begins her journey to a new and loving life with many great adventures and so many caring people that would do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat.
Novalee was about to discover treasures hidden in Sequoyah-in this group of distinct and deeply caring people, among them blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband, who hands out advice and photocopied books of the Bible.
Moses Whitecotton, the wise, softspoken, elderly black photographer eager to teach Novalee all he knows... and Forney Hull, the sort of odd librarian who hides his secrets and his feelings behind his world of books.
Novalee may be homeless and jobless, living secretly in a Wal-Mart, but she's beginning to believe she may have a future. through the touching and surprising adventures that lie ahead, she is going in the right direction.
The book, Where the Heart is, certainly put a different outlook for me on those maybe not so fortunate people who maybe live in not so nice areas of small towns. There is a lot of love to go around in some of these small communities, it made me believe in the strength of friendship, the goodness of down to earth people and the healing power of love. It certainly made me laugh and cry through every step of the way, through each word. I could not put this book down, any chance I had no matter where I was, I picked it up and away I went, I definitely recommend it!
