Pros: Large load capacity.
Cons: Problems, problems! Gasket that seals the door went bad, machine will mold
We purchased the Whirlpool Duet front load washer and dryer after our 3rd child was born since our top load was 10 years old and did not have the larger load capacity.
We had no problems with our top load set, just thought it was time to upgrade.
The washer worked great for the first 12 months, however we did notice the machine would mold and smell inside if the door was not left open after washing a load of clothes. Then the machine started leaking water. I could not find the leak and unfortunately did not purchase the extended warranty. I never thought I would need one since this machine was so expensive and our top load machine was in excellent shape and never had a problem after 10 years of service.
I contacted Whirlpool and found out my factory one year warranty had expired the same week I called. Imagine that! After a lot of begging and going through many people, they finally agreed to cover the parts if I paid for the labor. That was better than nothing I guess. The problem was the gasket on the front of the machine had a hole in it. That was repaired and another 8 months went by without incident. My wife then advised me the handle broke off the door and it would no longer close and lock. I purchased the handle and was able to replace it myself. Now a year later the locking mechanism on the door will not work and the machine will not start. Besides being without a washing machine, AGAIN, with three kids, I will have to spend more money out of my pocket on a machine that cost 3 times as much as my top load that never gave me a minutes trouble....
I would not recommend this machine to anyone!
If you do decide to take a chance and purchase the Whirlpool Duet model # GHW9100LWD please purchase the extended warranty. You will more than likely need it.
