sfbruce's Full Review: Whirlpool WFW8400TB Front Load Washer
We replaced an aging stacking unit with this washing machine and matching dryer. It has performed exactly as promised. We have found that our clothes are cleaner and the drying time is greatly reduced due to the fact that the high speed spin cycle removes most of the water from the clothes. We only use HE detergent (and not much for each load) as directed by Whirlpool and it works just fine.
The controls are functional, useful, and easy to understand. Cycle type is controlled by a knob and buttons control spin speed, water temperature, extra rinse, prewash, and end of cycle sound (on/off). It is also has a digital countdown timer to tell you how long a cycle will last. You can also delay the start of the wash cycle. We typically use the regular wash cycle, but have used the Whiter Whites and Sani cycle when washing really dirty items. There are many other cycles including Quick Wash (about 30 mins) and a Delicate/Hand Wash Cycle. Wash temps range from Super Hot to Cold.
Interestingly, our old dryer lint filter was frequently filled with fiber. Clearly this pair does a lot less damage to fabrics as the lint filter typically has very little in it even after a load of towels.
We had some concern about vibration after reading various posts. However, this unit is installed on the second story of a 100 year old San Francisco home and vibration has not been an issue. We know when the high speed spin is in use, but no vibration is felt by us or our downstairs tenants.
The design is modern and functional but without any fussy items that just add to the cost. We actually use every setting and button and understand that they are meant to do.
Overall, a well-made, highly functional washing machine.
