Okay washer, but there were problems

Pros: Uses little water and detergent on normal cycles.  Can clean small to large loads.

Cons: Design and/or manufacturing deficiencies   Two repairs within 7 months was a big disappointment. 

The Bottom Line: Same machine as WFW8500.  Can clean good.  When operating properly can be quiet.  May be design and/or manufacturing flaws that result in required repairs.

globalmail's Full Review: Whirlpool WFW8400TB Front Load Washer
We purchased this Whirlpool washer about 7 months ago in May 2008.  The one we have is WFW8400TW02 (white, bought in Canada).  It washes about 4 loads of average weight/size per week (not heavy use).

At 3 months a problem manifested.  The machine started squeaking during drum revolution -- tumbling and low/mid speed spins.  We persisted with patience thinking that the noise may go away.  This resulted in a couple of service calls (warranty) at about the sixth month.  The suspension springs at the top of the drum were replaced and the technican applied lubricant (although the factory specifications do not stipulate that).

At 4 months the second problem arose.  At low/mid spins the machine would start a clunking noise (moderate, not heavy).  It was thought that this was related to the springs, but it actually is related to the door boot.  The door boot started to discolour and loose firmness.  When the technician arrived to remedy the first problem (springs) he advised us that the boot should be replaced.  Another technician thought that the clunking noise was the boot vibrating.

The machine can wash clothes well when performing properly.  It uses little water and litter detergent.  We use 3x liquid concentrate and find that 1 or 2 teaspoons is enough for a mid sized load.

Some option (water temp, spin speed) cannot be selected at times.  This machine uses "preset" cycles on the main dial and some of these cycles limit your options.  I think that the company would be smart to provide an "override" button for those folks who know exactly what the want for a wash cycle.

The automatic door lock is too loud (like a hammer hitting a nail).
Design and/or manufacturing flaws (made in Mexico, apparently designed at the German offices).  Whirlpool is a large company and has been making machines for a long time.  There should be no room for the kind of problems we had.
