elzora's Full Review: Whirlpool WTW5300SQ / WTW5300SWH Top Load Washer
After visiting our daughter for nearly two weeks, I used many of her appliances, and to help me with my review I took notes while I was using this Whirlpool WTW5300SQ Top Load Washer. I think my family thought I was nuts, walking around the house with a notepad and pencil!
After using this washer several times, I can say I was very impressed. In fact, I would prefer a good basic machine such as this to my over priced Kenmore Front Loader! My daughter has owned this Whirlpool washer for almost a year, and she loves it too.
Features
This model is, as I stated, a top loading machine. It holds 3.2 cubic feet, and is considered a "super plus capacity". The color is white, so it goes with any decor.
There are 4 speeds for the wash and spin cycles, and a total of 16 cycles all together. There are five different water level settings, so this model is great for conserving water. If you want to wash just a few items you can do so on the lowest water levels.
You can adjust the water temperature with four different combinations, and the cycles are: regular, permanent press, delicate, quick wash, heavy duty, prewash, and extra rinse. There are dispensers for both the bleach and fabric softener.
Specs
The tub is porcelain, and the machines dimensions aer 26.8" wide, 42.5" high, and 25.5" deep. It weighs about 150 pounds. The machine has a 1/2 horsepower motor.
My Impressions
My daughter paid $700 for her washer and dryer set, so this is definitely an affordable washing machine! I would replace my $1500 front loader with this model in a heartbeat!
The door is extra wide, and this machine has the capacity to wash a bedspread or comforter. As with most top loaders, it has a 2 piece agitator, but it seems gentle enough for even delicates. I washed a shirt of my husbands that was 45% silk and said to dry clean only, but it came out beautifully.
The controls are all knobs, which make them easy to use and understand, even for someone who has never used a washer before. I also like pull knobs over electronic controls as there is less to go wrong and cheaper to repair if they do.
An upside of buying a front loader is that they use less water, but this model allows you to choose a variety of water levels, so washing just a few items doesn't waste water. Whirlpool says this model has a "SpillGuard" top, which simply means there is a short lip all around the perimeter of the top of the washer, so it would most likely contain spilled water, bleach, laundry soap, etc.
One concern of mine was how wet the clothes would be when removing them from the washer. My front loader sounds like a jet engine during the spin cycle and clothes come out fairly dry. I was not disappointed in this top loader washer, clothes were a little more damp than I'm used to, but I could live with the difference.
I love how top loading washing machines do not leave that nasty old water smell like my front loader does. The down side is that this machine is much noisier than my front loader, so there are trade offs for everything. Still, even with the noise, I would choose this model over my expensive one, it was easy to use, washed our clothes wonderfully, and has been a very reliable unit for our daughter and her husband. And at $350 it won't break the bank!
This is definitely a nicer top loading machine that the Sears Kenmore model we had and replaced several years ago. I gladly give this washer five stars for value, 4 stars for options, and another 5 stars for overall performance.
