| boranethf's Full Review: Whistler DE-1610 Radar Detector |
I started a job about 5 months ago in which I must commute about 40 miles to on long stretches of highway. After being pulled over three times, each time for going 5-15 mph over the speed limit, I decided I better try a radar detector. After researching on the internet, I decided to go down to Wal-Mart and pick up a detector. There wasn't much for selection there, and I didn't see any of the highly recommended brands that I saw on the web, so I decided to go with the cheapest one there. It was the Whistler 1610, for about $40. The day I bought the item I drove to work and spotted a state trooper with his radar gun handy. I noticed not so much as a peep out of the ol' Whistler until I was so close that I could smell the cop's breath - the Whistler sent out one single beep about 10 feet away from the cop. I drove around my hometown that night and the detector went off a plethora of times, each time without a cop in site. Then I went on a road trip this weekend and spotted several cops on the highway, and the Whistler made no sound whatsoever!! In town, again, it went off like crazy, but no cops were around. On my way back home from the road trip it went off once as I passed a cop, but I was so close that if I was speeding, I would have no time to adjust my speed. Needless to say, I'm taking the Whistler 1610 back to Wal-Mart today and getting my money back. I already purchased a Bel 950 over the internet for about $200 - hopefully I 'll have better luck with that one.
