| reallynotme03's Full Review: Whistler DE-1630 Radar Detector |
I purchased my Whistler detector at the Expomart in Monroeville. It was a refurbished product, so I was not sure whether it would be worthwhile or not. I have had plenty of time to observe it, though, while searching for problems that might have arisen from its being a refurbished product.
The Whistler 1630 is small and lightweight, streamlined in appearance. It also is very “vocal.” I have found that it is set off by every automatic door in the area, making proper radar detection in cities or industrialized places almost impossible. It comes with a city mode button also, which can be more of a pain than a help. If you are not paying direct attention to the lights on the detector, you will then not know if there is a policeman nearby. My detector, also, has the tendency to heat up so that on long road trips I become concerned for it, afraid that it will melt or break, and take it down. My friend purchased the exact same detector, though, and says that hers does no such thing, so I am willing to pass that off as its being a refurbished product.
I can’t say all bad things for the detector, though. The VG2 mode has saved me from police detection before, although I did not at once put the ringing phone sound and the blinking green light together with the potential for a policeman in the area. The actual radar detector has saved me multiple times, also, once picking up a radar signal from very far ahead of me long before I saw the police car itself.
If you are looking for a radar detector that shall be used more on open highways and away from cities, this is the one for you. If you want one that is not as likely to go off at every house alarm and automatic door, though, I would recommend that you find another.
