Many of the issues you experienced with the 1788 could be a misunderstanding of how the feature works and others have been resolved: The unit is defaulted to turn itself off after an hour. Most commutes are an hour or less. The option mode allows you to choose 2 hrs, 3 hrs or turn the option off so the unit stays on until you turn it off. For POP mode - the 1788 is the only battery powered unit to give 100% pop detection. The mounting issue is corrected! The bouncing you may have experienced is generally caused when the rubber bumper hasn't been installed on the windshield bracket - this bumper prevents this bouncing. The volume has been addressed as well. For the $ you can't get a better battery powered radar detector.
