Shortly after our wedding we went on a shopping excursion with gift certificates from local retailers. Those certificates combined with credits from returns of double received items amounted to a nice sum and allowed for us to select some desired items for our home. It was exciting and most of the items were easily agreed upon. That was until my hubby placed in the cart a box containing an unfamiliar item. The picture showed something resembling a flying saucer, well sort of, and the intended use was nearly as foreign.
My response was something along the lines of What is that?! and Why do we need it?! My husband met the objection with a look of shock that I couldnt possible not know what an Oster Automatic Egg Cooker was. This transferred into realization that I truly didnt know and he began to plea the case toward necessary ownership. As he explained he Grandpa, Mom, and rest of the family had them. According to him this obscure item was an essential small appliance and it held the power to convince me of its worth only if it made that initial entrance to our home.
Thus began my familiarization process with the Oster Automatic Egg Cooker which led to an appreciation for this kitchen helper.
What Is It?
Simply put It is an egg cooker! However I am sure that you gathered that from the product name. So a more appropriate question is perhaps Why do I need it? or How does it cook those dang things?
The unit is composed of four main pieces the base, an egg rack, a poaching dish, and a cover.
You can cook up to eight soft, medium or hard boiled eggs at one time. The base of the unit serves as a well for water and there are marks to match the water level to the desired egg style. You will use a glass or other desired water transporter to get the water from the sink to the egg cooker. Simply put water to the level line that matches your desired outcome. Next you will place the egg rack onto the base. This silver-colored rack has a needle in the center of it and eight holes in which to place the eggs upright. You firmly push the egg onto the needle and then place it on the desired hole. Now the lid is placed onto the unit, you plug it in and push the button on the front. When the eggs are done the Oster Automatic Egg Cooker automatically shuts off. You should remove the eggs (careful theyre hot) to prevent further cooking.
Or
You can cook up to four poached eggs at one time. The operational manner is close to the same one mentioned above but you are using the poaching tray. After a light surface treatment of butter, vegetable oil or vegetable spray you crack the eggs, allowing the content of one egg to be placed in one of the four tray recessions. Put water into the base well to the line indicating poached eggs. Next place the egg rack (inverted) onto the base, then the poaching tray, and finally the lid. Plug it in, push the button and the unit will automatically turn off when eggs are done.
The included instruction pamphlet offers approximately seven recipe ideas. Naturally any recipe you have that requires soft, medium, hard-boiled or poached eggs will work with eggs prepared in this unit. We have used this to prepare Easter eggs but the hole does allow excess dye to reach the egg. Generally we dont eat the eggs that are decorated so this isnt a challenge for us.
Closing Sentiments
I honestly appreciate the Oster Automatic Egg Cooker and am glad that my hubby introduced me to it. The entire unit is light, and small enough to tuck into a cupboard. This small appliance offers a convenience factor that makes it well worth the expenditure. We are on our second egg cooker merely because I preferred the updated coloring on the newer version.
Although the parts need to be hand-washed, the clean up is easy and this hasn't been a challenge.
If you like your eggs soft-cooked, medium-cooked, hard-cooked, or poached the Oster Automatic Egg Cooker is likely to meet your approval.
*Warning*
Those darn H&G rascals (CLs Pogomom and Ladysmom) have black-mailed us book folk (Top Reviewers & Advisors) by requiring ransom (reviews) if we desire to see a stop put to the imprisonment and unworthy treatment of the ep kids (+, -, =, !). While surveying my kitchen for reviewable items it occurred to me that the poaching tray of this egg cooker would serve as a nice bubble bath containment (on the counter I wouldnt cook the kids) for this precious kids. You see us intellectual book people will have no challenge meeting their demands (H&G CLs) we have excellent coaches (Grace and Redlass) and a superior group of contributors. Books Rule!
