What she said. I remember having nightmares for weeks after reading the unabridged version when I was little, and for that reason I've never read it to the boys. I think my eldest began reading it on his own but came to me in tears, so we found soemthing a little less unhappy for him.
Great review with some really thoughtful points in favour of using abridged classics. Thank you so much for participating in the write off!

... but I could never get into this book, despite having loved Call of the Wild. Maybe I should try reading it again sometime...
Great review, btw. Made me want to try reading it again!

I remember reading White Fang in sixth grade and being semi-traumatized by some of what was in it. This would probably be a better choice for my daughter who loves animals and is shaping up to be just as over-sensitive as I ever was!
Thanks so much, Danielle, for participating in the write-off!
