The Whitehall: A Gem of a Boutique Hotel in the Beautiful Goldcoast!

Written: Mar 27 '08
Pros:Fantastic location, superb staff and service, top-notch amenities, beautiful vintage building, lovely and comfortable rooms.
Cons:The only con is when your stay comes to an end!
The Bottom Line: My favorite boutique hotel in Chicago. Absolutely perfect!

My husband and I have stayed in a number of downtown Chicago hotels, some larger chains but mostly boutique hotels, and I have to say the Whitehall Hotel is my favorite. The Whitehall is perfect for a weekend getaway for practical reasons—you’re just steps away from amazing restaurants, shopping, Michigan Avenue and Watertower Place, theatres, etc. The thing that really makes this place special, however, is its character. The Whitehall is vintage elegance in the heart of Chicago. The rooms are homey and lovely with a bed and breakfast feel. My husband and I got so comfortable that sometimes it was a toss-up between going out and staying in! The bed was fantastic—firm support with feathertop—divinely comfortable. They’ve decorated the rooms very nicely, with comfy, oversized chairs and plenty of room. Twenty-four hour room service is available, and all the staff members are true pros—very knowledgeable about the area and things to do, extremely accommodating, and very friendly. Fornetto Mei is the restaurant adjoining the hotel, and I’d have to argue that it’s one of the most underrated restaurants in the city! Ot boasts a cozy, warm atmosphere with nice views of the sidewalk for people watching, and the food is delicious. It’s a very interesting concept as well—they serve both Italian and Asian fare, but it’s not fusion—they keep the two cuisines separate. A lovely wine list accompanies the restaurant’s menu. The building dates from 1928, and of course its location in the Gold Coast neighborhood is delightful. If you’re looking for a luxurious, charming, beautiful little boutique hotel in Chicago, this is the place to go!
