Pros:Perfectly balanced between tart and sweet, spicy, crisp, delicious
Cons:a bit pricey
The Bottom Line: Wickles Pickles are the pickle answer for anyone wanting more than one dimension from their pickle. Bold and tasty, these made me a believer.
I’ve always been on the fence with pickles. Sure I like a nice kosher deli spear with a Jewish deli corned beef sandwich piled high with juicy meat and topped with deli mustard. But I never could be bothered to keep a jar to munch at home. My seven year old loves pickles, especially dill, and I keep a jar on hand for him. For me, pickles hold little interest. I guess my grandmother’s homemade bread and butter pickles were good, but not as enticing as her blueberry pies. I understood the pickle and could get the fascination but it didn’t take hold in me. Until I discovered a brand that sought something more, something spicy, and spicy I like. When I first tried Wickles Pickles I was hooked. Everything that is good with bread and butter pickles combined with a spiciness that is pleasing to this chilihead without being overwhelming. Heck, even my mom, who is a chili wimp, likes them.
Wickles Original Pickles come in 16oz jars and are described as wickedly delicious pickles by the manufacturer. The pickles combine three of the most popular pickle flavor ingredients, dill, garlic, and sweetness from sugar, and add an extra punch from chili to set them apart. Often pickles are very one sided, sour and garlic or sour and dill as with deli pickles. Or else they’re just plain sweet without anything to offset that sweetness. Wickles are different in that they combined everything that is tasty in other pickles and add an extra kick of chili to bring them up to another level.
Sweetness is balanced with acid and dill and garlic are part of a supporting cast, rather than leads. Add in enough chili to get most people’s attention, without dominating the other flavors, and what you have is one very interesting pickle. A pickle that changes my opinion about this side dish that I had relegated to mere window dressing. This is a seriously good pickle, wicked good!
In our area Wickles Pickles are available for about $4.75 to $5.00 per 16oz jar.
