Goose Island India Pale Ale is brewed in the classic tradition of the IPA style of beer. We can credit the British for bringing us the India Pale Ale style. This type of beer is known for its high hop content and spicy taste. Goose Island IPA has a very citrus- like aroma and a pronounced smell of hops. There is a pretty large amount of foam that dissipates slowly. The beer is golden brown in color and somewhat cloudy. These initial observations will spark your curiosity, especially the smell, which is like a mixture of orange, lemon, and grapefruit. The alcohol level is 5.9 percent by volume, which is a little higher than average.
When you taste Goose Island IPA for the first time, you will notice that it is highly hopped and bitter, like this style usually is. But it is not overly bitter. The brewers at Goose Island knew just when to stop the infusion of hops so that it wouldn't be offensively bitter. There are plenty of other IPA styles, as well as lager styles, that are far more bitter than this, so don't let the IPA label stop you from at least trying this beer before you begin to pass judgment.
This beer has won several awards, including a 1995 award at the World Beer Championships. Several other Goose Island products have also been recognized for their quality, with awards going to most of the Goose Island lineup.
As an enthusiastic lover of hops, I really enjoyed this IPA. This is the style of beer that is best appreciated by those who really, really love hops. I am proud to say that I am one of them.
