armyman's Full Review: NHL Hitz 2002 for PlayStation 2
NHL Hitz is not really a simulation of hockey, it is a arcade version of hockey. Now that is not bad mind you. It just depends on what you want and expect out of the game. If youre a huge hockey nut and want a game that simulates every aspect of hockey and its play, then NHL Hitz is not for you. If you want a really fun game full of goals and big hits, then NHL Hitz is for you. Casual players who want to sit down and play a fun and exciting game of hockey will love this game. All the NHL star players and Teams are here, plus you can make your own custom players and Teams.
The smaller rink, 4 on 4 play with lots of hits and fast game play make this game pure fun at its basic level. There are no penalties such as icing or off-sides to worry about either. I love the mode where you go through playing NHL teams one at a time upgrading your players skills continually as you play harder and harder teams. The goals can come in bunches and I mean bunches, 12-15 games is not at all uncommon. As I said, arcade, not simulation. Still big fun to play with lots of big hits and big goals.
Should you still buy 2002 if you run across it used somewhere for a good price? If you want a purely fun game that will give you and your friends hours of entertainment then go for it. 2003 adds some things to help it appeal a bit more to the true hockey fan, but nothing that really makes the game more purely fun on the arcade level.
I have both the 2002 and 2003 versions of this game. Both are very fun to play, but read my 2003 review to see the differences and a little more about the 2003 version.
