| theirishfox24's Full Review: Wilson Irons |
I had been playing golf for about 8 years with my original set of irons; just a set of cheap clubs I got for 100 dollars. Anyway, for the past year I had been working on my game and had gotten better with those old clubs, and decided it was time to invest in a quality set of irons.
But where to start? With the many manufacturers and brands of clubs, it is almost impossible to find a starting place, especially for a high-handicapper or someone new to the game. So I went to the golf store in town, and asked for advice. Based on what I was looking for in a set of irons (forgiveness and accuracy), the guy recommended the Deep Reds, the new Titleist irons, and a set of Jack Nicklaus irons. After asking him some more questions about those three, and hitting them all, I liked the feel of the Wilson's in my hand. The irons are oversized, which gives golfers like me extra confidence standing over the ball. The fat shaft design of the Deep Reds keeps the club head stable at impact, promoting a straighter shot (or at least straight along the clubface direction). This is not a gimmick either, I have noticed much better feel and control with the fatter shaft, I highly recommend it.
I have had these clubs for about a month now. Before this season, I had never broken 90. I broke it once in March this year, and since I have had these irons (purchased in July), I have shot three rounds in the high 80s. I can't attribute my success all to the new clubs, but they haven't hurt. Once the fundamentals are in place, practice with a great set of irons builds confidence and lower scores.
One of the hardest things about selecting new irons is trying to get feedback from other players. Online, over the phone, or on the course, everybody has different opinions on what clubs to use. I claim to be no expert on fitting clubs with golfers. What I can offer though, is my skill level of golf, and hopefully someone with similar attributes can compare themselves, and at least find a starting place with Wilson Deep Reds.
Like I mentioned before, I have been a golfer for 8 years, with the last 2 more avidly. In the past year and a half, I have gone from a golfer whose maximum drive was in the 200 range, to an average drive of 250-260 with the driver. I usually use my 3-wood of the tee, averaging 230-240. All of my distances have increased in the past year due to much reading and practice (never had a professional lesson). With the Wilson Deep Reds, I hit my 5 iron roughly 200, and my 9 iron I hit on the short side of 150. As of late (the past few months) I have been playing more-or-less bogey golf. I put stiff shafts in the irons, because obviously I swing fast and hard, and that seemed to make a difference in the feel, accuracy, and distance.
Hopefully, any golfer, but in particular those who are similar to my attributes, will benefit from this review.
