The Best Irons on the Market
Written: Jul 26 '01 (Updated Jul 27 '01)
Pros:Playability, weight, flex, huge club face for improved accuracy
Cons:Absolutely nothing, except they can get heavy on the back if it's really hot.
The Bottom Line: The Best thing to happen to irons, the Wilson Fat Shafts have made a marked improvement in my golf game.
I am pleased to relay to anyone the joy of playing with the Wilson Fat Shaft Irons.
First, a little about myself. I play about 10 rounds a month and have a handicap of approximately 7. I have been golfing for a number of years and only recently has my short game come full circle. I used to struggle with my irons finding that I was not as accurate or stable as I wanted to be with my strokes, or that distance was a variable I had little control over. However, recently, thanks in large part to the Fat Shaft(s), I have been enjoying success with my irons.
I used to play with Callaways and then later Titleist, but I never experienced any comfort hitting irons. In either case I found the clubs to skinny, or not balanced correctly, or not solid with impact or quick enough to get under a ball. The story of my experience with the Wilson Fat Shafts, does not go the same way.
Hitting these irons, I find I have much more control over the ball. With a wider club head, I have found that a ball can straighten out even if miss hit. The clubs have excellent weight to them. They won't slow you down, but they do feel heavier (and are heavier) than the irons I've hit with before. This gives me a more controlled swing, instead of the loose feeling when a club is too light and the club speed becomes an issue.
Now, some specs on the clubs:
- Fat shaft technology provides a larger tip diameter (.535" versus typical .370", or 45% wider) providing 40% more torsional stability than skinny shafted irons for greater accuracy.
- Deep cavity back perimeter weighted cast head features an extremely thin face which is much more forgiving on mis-hits.
- POLR (Point of Least Rigidity) iron offers a deep undercut cavity with maximum perimeter weighting (around and inside of cavity) yielding a thinner face, imparting greater ball velocity at impact for greater distance.
- Low center of gravity to get the ball airborne easier.
- Progressive offset and sole width for easy alignment and more forgiveness on long irons and on miss hits.
Since switching over to the Wilson Fat Shafts I have experienced a turn around in my ability to hit irons. I can control the ball better with more stability and consistency in my shots. But don't take my word for it, get to the range and hit with these clubs. I'm sure you'll be impressed with what you find.
