With the Wilson Fat Shaft Irons , the Wilson golfing people have given average golfers a great weapon to add to their bags. These irons blend the stability larger shafts, the increased distance provided by graphite, and the forgiveness of a deep cavity backed club head. The various features of the Fat Shafts each compliment one another and are a joy to play.

The shafts are visibly larger in diameter than the typical shafts in golf clubs. The greater diameter makes these clubs more stable. The clubface deflects less when the ball is struck. Thus on off center hits the sidespin imparted to the golf ball is lessened. The ball goes much closer to its intended flight plan.

The clubfaces of these cavity backed irons have a large forgiving sweet spot. Because Wilson has moved so much of the weight to the perimeter of the clubface, you can miss a bit and still get solid contact with the ball. The center of the face is very thin and hard and golf balls just launch from this surface.

As I get older (56 soon!), my golf swing gets shorter and shorter. Even though I have always tried to do strength training, time marches on. The graphite shafts in these clubs allow me to regain some of the distance I've lost due to declining flexibility. Here is where the 'fatter' shafts give their greatest benefit. I like the weight of these irons. They are heavier than other irons. I feel like this heaviness gives me great feedback during the swing. It helps to prevent me from snatching the club back on the backswing. The heavier clubs seem to promote a smooth deliberate swing. This matches my normal tendencies. Have you seen the smooth, almost lackidaisical swing of Freddy Couples? Okay, now imagine that swing underwater and you have some idea of my sleepy swing.

These are expensive clubs, but I consider them worth the price. Iron play has long been the bane of my golf game. I still consider myself weak with the long irons, but the Wilson Fat Irons have even helped me here. With the great rise in utility woods, I usually replace my 3 iron with a utility wood. It is on the shorter irons that these irons have helped me most. I still don't hit as many greens as I'd like but manage to hit a few.

The Wilson Fat Shaft Irons are well suited to my game. I am happy with their performance and heartily recommend them. I think they are great for most any game. I would especially recommend the clubs to that group of golfers who are looking to regain a little distance and still need a club that is very forgiving. And, that's a large group indeed.
