Wilson makes some of the finest golf equipment for the most reasonable prices in an inflated market, and yet, their equipment is still very much underrated. Their return of the Staff line in 2004-05 really marked the return of Wilson equipment that will compete with the best and most expensive stuff on the market. The quality of the of the Wilson Staff equipment was confirmed when Padraig Harrington used Wilson Staff's Pi5 irons to win two consecutive British Opens. For the past two seasons, I've had those Pi5's in my bag and have been very satisfied with their performance. However, this summer, I've been experimenting with forged irons and really wanted to put some in my bag, preferably as my mid and short irons while keeping the Pi5 long irons. Naturally, the Fi5 forged irons were a leading candidate for the one's for me to buy and put into use.
I decided to pull the trigger upon stumbling on a used mixed set of the 3-4 irons being Pi5 and the rest being Fi5's. The deal was also sweetened by the mixed set having rifle shafts, compared to the Dynamic Gold shafts my old set had. The shape of the irons change as the numbers get bigger and the center gravity gets higher in the club head as the lofts of the heads gets higher. In my set, the five, six, and seven irons are cavity backs, while the eight, nine, and pitching wedge are traditional blades. If you purchase the whole set, the long irons are muscle backs.
The Wilson Fi5 Forged Irons have been an absolute joy for me out on the course. Like any forged iron, shots that are poorly struck have a slightly harsh feel and shorter distance than purely struck shots. However, when the ball is struck purely, you get an absolutely perfect, almost blissful feel in your hands and a mid-high ball flight that carries like it's a line drive. On top of all of this, the ball always seems to drop softly, and comes to rest within one or two hops. The feel of these irons are enough for me to just keep going back to the range to hit rock solid range balls, it's just that good.
These irons have more to offer than just buttery feel and ball flight. I've found that my shots are more controlled in terms of direction and distance with the Fi5 irons. The touch and control you have on full and half swings with the low iron blades is extraordinary. You can impart almost about as much backspin with your seven iron as you can with most wedges. My confidence has increased due to these irons being so consistent. Of course, with any forged iron with a small head size, there really isn't much forgiveness to speak of. So like all forged irons, these are made with the low handicap/excellent ball striker in mind.
The best part of these irons - the price. You can get a set of top-notch forged irons from the company that has the most major titles of any other for less than any other set of high quality forged irons. If you can find a set of these brand new, you can often get them for around $300. It really doesn't get much better than that.
Final Thoughts
The Wilson Staff Fi5 Forged Irons are not only an excellent value, but some of the finest irons I've ever hit. Their balance, feel, and, performance reminded me of a set of forged Mizuno irons, just at half the price.
