2nd Best Golf Ball on the Market

Written: Jul 11 '02 (Updated Jul 11 '02)
Pros:Feel, Distance, Durability, Cool Box :)
Cons:Bit Pricy
The Bottom Line: 2nd best golf ball on the market, solid distance combined with punishing spin and feel will complete a low handicappers golf arsenal.

Let's face it when you are talking about high quality and well known golf equipment the Wilson Company really doesn't come up in conversation, especially in golf ball talk. People these days think Nike, Callaway, Titleist (which is the best), Strata etc. I think that the Wilson I wound golf balls are the diamond in the rough so to speak.

I hadn't really seen the Wilson Iwound golf balls until about 2 weeks ago when a buddy of mine won a closest to the hole competition in a tournament and got a free box of these. He wanted nothing to do with them so he sold them to me for 5 buck, even though they retail for about 35$ but i wasn't really going to argue.

I'm a Conventional Titleist man, Pro V 1 and Tour Prestige, so everything i do a review on I compare to them. It's a difficult task living up to the best ball in golf, the Pro V.

Anyways one afternoon the course wasn't full so i decided to go out and play nine holes with the I wound Golf Balls. I though the balls would be somewhat similar to a Nike Tour Accuracy or a Strata Professional Distance. But boy was i wrong! The ball had distance superior to that even of a hard Top Flite and yes even my famed Pro V. Durability was better considering that the outer layer was a bit thicker. They putt just as true and solid as a Pro V, but it lacked a bit in the department of around the green type of shots.

I mean don't get me wrong, you have to remember im comparing it to the Pro V, its a great ball but i just couldnt get the distance control around the greens that i was looking for. But lets face it after about an hour and 45 minute round (9 holes) i braved the course with a solid 38, 3 over! This is about average, but with a new golf ball i was impressed.

Overall Ball Performance Review (For Those of You Who Dont Understand Golf Lingo Very Well)

Distance: I got solid distance off the tee and with iron shots, more than any ball i have ever played.

Control: The midair movement of the ball was easily controlled, more so than a Titleist Professional or a Callaway but not quite like a Pro V.

Durability: With a harder core the IWound can stand up to just about anything, except of course for the fear of every golfer, the famed cartpath.

Feel: The feeling and sound given by the golf ball when struck with a club was excellent it felt soft and solid with every swing of the club, not to mention a solid ball to put with.

I also think that these balls come in a kick butt box, its really unique in being it is a square, dumb reason for buying them but i just thought it was pretty cool. If you are looking for them in a store, you will know when you see them.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

iWound technology incorporates the world's first injection molded, wound inner structure. Made of Hytrel ( i dont have a clue what this is but it has some sort of scientific name so it has to be good), this patent-pending design replaces old rubber band threads with a solid winding that produces shot stopping spin around the green. Why? Old rubber band balls lose distance, compression, and shape with every hit.

Nothing beats non-wound distance, and iWound starts with our highly resilient solid core. Advanced polybutadiene technology is the engine of iWound, and produces a ball that is barely legal off the tee.

Now my handicap is about a 6, meaning i usually shoot in the neighborhood of a 78, but every now and again i can pop in a 70 just as easily as an 85. But i think that this ball is a fairly good ball for mid to low to scratch golfers. I would say people with a handicap of 15 and below would be best suited for this ball. If you go to www.wilsongolf.com and click on the information about the iWound then you can take a survey and it will tell you if this ball is right for you or not.

I wouldn't recommend this ball to high handicappers just because it's a fairly expensive ball about 3 bucks per ball. So if you are looking for a big difference in the game you probably need lessons not a different ball.

In conclussion i think this is the best ball on the market.... hahaha that is next to the Pro V one. But if you dont feel like paying 50 bucks for Pro V's then give these balls a try, i think you will be surprised.
Well thanks for reading and again if there are any questions just email and if you need any more info visit www.wilsongolf.com
