It seemed like a good idea. Then again, running around naked after the World Cup Finals seemed like a good idea at the time too. Cookie cutters in the shape of Barbie. How could you go wrong with that? Oh, let me count the ways. Any time a company tries to make a cookie cutter based on a complex shape there are liberties taken. You are never going to get an exact shape so that means you are going to have to make up for it when you decorate it. The four set of plastic cookie cutters from Wilton are no longer in production but you can still find them in some stores as well as online. They were such an epic fail that it marked the downfall of almost all of the Barbie themed products from the partnership with Wilton. These are plastic cutters but they have a completely closed body to them so they are not like a perimeter cutter. This means you have to press the cutter in to flour and tap off the excess before you cut out each cookie. If that sounds time consuming then you are in for a real eye opener because that's just the start of it.

Barbie Heart: This one requires a little bit of time when decorating to get it to look good; it has five different flowers and the Barbie name logo that get imprinted into the cookie. You could use colored sugar to make the flowers but that is tedious and time consuming. It’s best to use a squeeze bottle with some royal icing; if you opt for that method of decorating this cookie you can get away with using three or four colors and you can use the same ones for the butterfly shaped cookie too. Even though this is an attractive looking cookie when it is decorated it is something that takes up a lot of time. You do need to press evenly when making the shape and that there is enough flour dusted on the inside of the cutter so it won't stick.
Barbie Bust: Wow. Wilton gets points for being creative but the ending result of the Barbie bust is just that, a complete bust. The Barbie name logo at the bottom is about the only good thing to this cookie. Her facial detail is horrible and this cookie is guaranteed to give little girls nightmares. A lot of the success or failure of this cutter is in how you decorate it. There's no easy way to do the face but the nose / nostrils are just huge. The hair comes out nice and there is no need to frost or ice it if you are using a sugar cookie mix because of the color of the dough.
Butterfly: I would rather use a regular butterfly shaped cookie cutter than this one; yes, you do get some impressions in the face of the cookie but the overall shape looks like a blob so if you don't spend time adding different colors to it, it isn't going to look great. How this actually qualified as a Barbie cookie cutter is beyond me. It is girlie looking and if you take the time to decorate it, it can look cute but if you are making these for a party you are looking at about three minutes a cookie to add the detail to them after they have cooled – then you have to let them sit and harden if you are using royal icing. You also have to be careful when transferring this to the cookie sheet, it can get stretched out of shape and look pretty bad when it comes out of the oven.
Flower: Out of all four cutters, this is the one that is the most functional. It still requires a moderate amount of work to get it to look good but the shape of it is more defined than the others. You can do these in a lot of different colors depending on the theme you are going with and it is the only cutter from the set that still gets used. There are nine petals to the flower so you need to have a steady hand when applying royal icing; you could get away with adding colored sugars to it before you bake it but you will end up losing a lot of the detail to it. There are two stems on the sides of the flower, if you want to it look more like a flower than a plant I strongly suggest that you cut these two pieces off before you bake or decorate them.
If you have a lot of time to kill or love a baking challenge then definitely hunt around for these, otherwise try something else to make treats for a Barbie themed birthday party. I only paid two dollars for them so it worked out to fifty cents a cutter but given the poor performance of three of them I really ended up paying two dollars for one functional cutter. Almost all of the Barbie themed items from Wilton are now out of production so if you see something that you like don’t drag your feet and debate over it because it might not be there the next time you go shopping.
