Pros:Fun “princess” shapes, shaker container, cute colors.
Cons:100% sugar .. so be prepared for hyper active kids.
The Bottom Line: Die Barbie, die.

If you have a little girl that’s into Barbie, chances are that eventually you will end up getting at least one of the Wilton Barbie themed items. Until little Annabelle came along I had no need for such girlie things – in face – I never knew half these items existed until the little girl with blond pigtails, blue eyes and more oomph than the Energizer Bunny spotted the shaker container at Michaels. Her eyes glazed over, her speech slurred and I swear .. there was drool on her chin … “oooohhhhh loooookkkkk bbbarrrrrbeeeeee” – she looked like a tiny little zombie as she gravitated towards the display of pink and purple items – “oohhh, looookkk”. She gingerly picked up all the items that were within her reach and, without even looking, dropped them over her back into the cart. One by one, I’d take them out and put them back … she was too into the Barbie stuff to realize what was going on so when she turned around and saw only three of her glorious finds in the cart, she was pretty content. Then of course we had to get pink icing but that is where I drew the line; I may crave in and get the sprinkles but there’s no way I am doling out cash for pink icing when I can make a huge batch of it for about twenty cents. Call me cheap, call me thrifty .. but you know what – I can’t justify paying for some “special” frosting when the only thing that makes it special is some goofy photo of a doll on the front, yes, Barbie, I am talking about you.

When you hear the name Barbie Sprinkles you might assume that these are Barbie shaped sprinkles – wrong. They are “Barbie themed” sprinkles which basically means you are paying a hell of a lot of money for shapes that kind of, sort of look like they could be in the Barbie family. Of course at six bucks a pop, only the little girls that really whine, protest and stomp around in their noisy plastic Barbie shoes are really going to get these – that is unless mom too has a pink and purple Barbie monkey on her back. No chance of that happening here. She’s celebrating her birthday this weekend so, at the time of purchase, I justified them as a party supply. The basics of this are similar to the Wilton Scooby-Doo Shaped Sprinkles - shapes that can be tied in to the theme but aren’t exactly replicas of the characters. The Barbie Shaped Sprinkles provides you with four colorful shapes in an easy to dispenser, all certified kosher and suitable for topping of any type of dessert.

The Wilton Barbie Shaped Sprinkles container has four shapes in four colors: a rather mutated looking purple butterfly, green flower, pink heart and yellow crown / tiara. Of course these shapes are left up to your own interpretations – you might look at the butterfly and see a big “x” or the green flower might look like some weird image from a 60's acid flashback .. irregardless, the shapes are nice and sharp, colorful and really do give plain white frosted treats a nice kick in the pants. At six bucks a container .. they better. And speaking of the container – this is one of the best parts of the product. Each shape has it’s own well filled with almost three ounces of sprinkles. Each of the wells has its own lid so you never have to worry about “contaminated” sprinkles. This also means that it’s great for kids to use since they really have to do some serious shaking to get a ton of them out. I like the fact that I can open one or two of the lids and mix the colors as well as the fact that when you close the lid it stays shut, no popping open or risking them being exposed to moisture and ending up one huge clump of colored sugar.

Decorating With Barbie!

We’ve tried these out on cupcakes as well as frosted sugar cookies, both with good results but you do need to work quick if you are using these on top of a royal icing – this sets up rather fast and instead of having the Barbie bits mix in with the icing chances are all that will happens is that you dent the icing and end up with cookies that look like they’ve been through a war zone. I suggest topping off cakes, brownies, whipped topping and cupcakes as soon as possible; the longer you wait, the less adhesive or receptive the surface will be. All that’s needed to decorate with these is a little wrist action to shake them out of the bottle – you don’t need to press them in to the icing or frosting nor do you need to apply anything over them to keep them in place. So far I haven’t seen any of the colors bleed – even when they were applied to cupcakes and they sat around for a day or two. This means you can make and decorate your snacks without having to worry about them breaking down or getting discolored.

Not Just For Cupcakes!

It seems that Annabelle is really starting to love spending time in the kitchen; she started asking for sprinkles on the most bizarre things but then again, she is a kid and they aren’t exactly known for the most stable of thought processes. So far she’s used these on top of Jell-O [of course Barbie Jell-O], ice cream, anything that gets served with whipped cream or whipped topping, peanut butter sandwiches [because you know the crunchy variety isn’t crunchy enough], masked potatoes – yes you read that correctly – and her favorite – right out of the container for that quick mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Noting like pure sugar to get you going. I really think that if these were just regular sprinkles in a container she wouldn’t really pay them much attention – but since it has Barbie on it, it gets exalted to some higher plain, worshiped like some little plastic deity.

The Bottom Line

Normally Annabelle doesn’t go for the straight, off the shelf Barbie stuff; until recently she stuck with the Princess stuff and would turn her nose up at almost everything that didn’t have that logo on it. Let’s just hope and pray that this is some temporary lapse of reason and that she doesn’t get too into the regular Barbie stuff. If you have a little pink princess running around these are a nice way to add a little extra touch to their desserts or snacks but at six bucks a pop you might be wise to look for the cheap sprinkles in the same design to refill the container with when it starts to run dry. Sure that might seem a little devious but so is marketing something that really isn’t a Barbie item .. sure they look cute but for six dollars I want something that sort of, kind of resembles the little pink wench.

As always, thanks for the visit …
