| Naomi7835's Full Review: Wilton Basic Decorating Set |
If you've ever thought about making and decorating your own cakes that will look like it was decorated in a bakery, for a Birthday, Anniversary or a special Holiday, then you should consider buying one of these Wilton 25 Piece Basic Cake Decorating sets. I've always looked at these in the stores, but never did buy one. They sell for $12.99. So when my daughter surprised me with this Wilton Decorating Set for Christmas, I was really happy. At one time I was considering signing up for a Wilton Cake decorating class that is available at our A.C. Moore craft store. Now with this basic Wilton set, I can get a start on how to decorate cakes, cookies and cupcakes. With this set I can now learn the basics of cake decorating. I figured with a little practice I could decorate my cakes that would please and impress my family and friends.
Included in this set are these:
1)--1 Tip #3 for writing, making dots and outlining.
2)--2 Tips #16 and #21 for making stars, shells, rosettes and zigzags.
3)--1 Tip #67 for making leaves.
4)--! Tip #104 for making roses, ruffles, and bows.
5)--1 #9 Flower nickel plated nail on which to create roses and icing flowers.
6)--2-quick change Couples.
7)--12-Disposables Decorating Bags. These bags are heavy duty and transparent that are easy to use.
8)--4-½oz. jars of icing colors. Lemon yellow, Christmas red, Sky Blue and Leaf green.
9)--An Illustrated instruction booklet which shows you the basic decorating techniques. All the designs in this booklet can be made with the tips, tools and the icing colors in this quality set.
I was very happy to get this Wilton Basic Decorating set because I have 4 March Birthdays coming up. In fact my oldest son had a Birthday yesterday and I made and decorated my first cake with this Wilton Basic Set. I think it came out pretty well. He couldn't believe that I had decorated my self.
There is a Buttercream Icing recipe in the booklet, or you can decorate your cake with supermarket canned icing. The set did not come with a icing mix, but it can be purchased at any store that sells Wilton products. I decided to make the icing recipe that came in the booklet . If you do use Store Icing you will need 4 cans to decorate a 2 layer cake.
At first I had a little trouble getting the icing to go on smoothly, so by just adding 2 extra Tbsp. of milk, it made it easier to go on more smoothly.
The recipe in the booklet makes 3 cups of icing. It can also be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week. The icing should be covered with a damp cloth until your ready to decorate.
I practiced using several of the decorating tips on a piece of waxed paper that I placed on the back of a cookie sheet. The decorations then can be scraped off and whipped again for using again.
To use the bag with the tips cut 1/4 off the tip of the bag with scissors. Drop the tip into the bag so one half of the tip is exposed. You can also use use the bags using the couplers and tips which allows you to change tip sizes with just one decorating bagful of icing. No need to refill and fit new bags, or just use the tips alone.
There are several ways to hold the decorating bag, depending on which tip your using. This took a little practice to get the best results.
To write, print, outline or do zigzags, shells, leaves, or bows, you have to hold the bag at a 45 degree angle and touch the tip of the surface. Squeeze at the starting point so that the icing sticks to the surface. When the decoration is complete , raise the tip slightly to end the decorating, stop squeezing and pull away.
Practice for even pressure control and movement, so that your decorations are smooth and continuous.
To make stars, rosettes, star flowers, and drop flowers, you have to hold the decorating bag straight up and down to the surface and squeeze at the starting point so the icing sticks to the surface. Then raise the tip slightly to end the decoration, stop squeezing and then pull away.
I like the Wilton Icing colors for decorating because they are concentrated (a little goes a long way) and it gives you the deepest most vivid colors. I've seen these at most Craft stores and these icing colors can be purchased for $3.50 for 4 basic colors, along with the disposable Decorating bags for $3.19 for 24 bags.
When I made and decorated my son his Birthday cake yesterday, I covered most of the top of the cake with the easy one squeeze stars with different icing colors and wrote "Happy Birthday" in the middle of the cake. On the sides of the cake I decorated it with ruffles, and zigzags. He couldn't believe that It wasn't a Bakery decorated cake. Grant you it wasn't perfect, but everyone was really impressed with how nice it came out.
Now all my kids want me to make their spouses cakes for their Birthdays. Hmmm what did I get myself into here. LOL.
With a little practice and following the instructions in the booklet it was really easy and fun to decorate this cake for my son. Although I have not tried to make the roses yet. I think they will require a lot more practice, but by my March Birthdays, I should be a pro at decorating my cakes, at least I hope so.
I highly recommend this Wilton 25 piece Basic Cake Decorating Set if your a beginner, and would like your cakes to look fantastic. Invest in one of these Wilton sets to impress your family and friends.
Thanks for Reading and "Happy Decorating".
May The Lord Bless and Heal Our Country.
