| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Bat Comfort Grip Cutter - 2310-661 |
Being someone that loves Halloween, has a passion for baking and has amassed a fair number of cookie cutters I was totally stoked that Wilton added some new Comfort Grip cutters to their line up. Even though they did away with a few other Halloween themed cutters to make room for the bat and tombstone shapes, I was happy to see that they did add new items. They have a couple of other bat shaped cutters available but this one has a smoother design to it so it is easier to decorate and perfect for kids to use if they like to help out in the kitchen. The Comfort Grip cutters used to cost $2.99 but Wilton raised the price to $3.19 about a year ago. Even so, its oversized shape and grip styled top make it a great item to have around for Halloween baking. This isn't something that has to be used exclusively for cookies; you ca use it to cut out mini sandwiches, for toast or pancakes, Rice Krispie Treats and even brownies. One of the reasons that this can be used for so many different things is the depth of it. Most cookie cutters, plastic or metal, aren’t all that deep but this one is an inch and a half high so you can use it to cut in to things that other cutters just can't handle. If you are going to use this to make cookies you will want to use something that stays firm and doesn't spread. I suggest gingerbread or a basic sugar cookie. If you are going to decorate these you will want them to be flat; if you remove them from the oven and the are a little on the puffy side just give the cookie sheet a tap on the counter and it will knock some of the air out of them. This will make the cookie crisper so if you like them on the chewy side don't tap the tray. I like to use parchment paper because it eliminates a lot of the grease that you can get if you baked them on a plain cookie sheet. It also helps with clean up time if you are adding sprinkles to the cookies before you bake them. If you want to make my beloved "Bats of Doom" add some black food tint to the dough as you are mixing it. If you add too much dye to the mix it will temporarily stain the inside of your mouth when you eat them. Nothing will happen to you but it is something that you should be prepared for because it can freak people out if you smile and the inside of your mouth, as well as your teeth, are jet black. The overall shape of this cutter is sweet; it has a smoother look than the Grippy styled bat shape in the four piece assortment that Wilton released a few years ago. The bat shape in that four piece set had more defined wings and a bolder look to it. I love this shape for making cookie sandwiches! To make them you do need to flip the raw cookies over so you will have shapes that match up when you assemble the cookies. Because of the depth of this cutter you can also use it to cut ice cream if you want to make frozen treats. I suggest using a half gallon container of ice cream and slicing it in to half inch pieces. Use the cutter to core out the bat shapes and then assemble the cookies and refreeze them so the ice cream seeps into the cookie and keeps it from falling apart. When those cookie sandwiches are hardened you can dip them in chocolate or press the edges into chopped nuts or Mini M&M's. Because of the shape of this cutter there are so many things that you can do with it. It is a little larger than most of the other Comfort Grip cookie cutters; it measures about four and a half inches wide so you will have to allow for a little bit of extra room when you are putting them on your cookie sheet to bake them. Since they are larger than normal you are going to have to make sure that when you remove them from the cookie sheet to cool off that they don't get lodged in the sections of a wire rack or fall through them. The first few batches I made with this bat cutter turned out a little wavy. While it didn’t ruin the cookie it did make it hard to decorate with royal icing. Annabelle didn't like this bat cutter at first, she wanted to use the one in the Grippy set but after she saw all the cool things that could be made with this one because of the smoother scallop on the bottom she gave up trying to make Rice Krispie cut outs with the other cutter. As I mentioned, the Comfort Grip cutters do cost more than other coolie butters but they are larger, easier to work with an there are a lot more things that you can do with these than with regular plastic or metal cutters. They clean up easily, can be used with almost any kind of dough outside of anything with nuts or hard chips and they generally last longer than other cutters. ================== ^V^ © 2009 Freak369 ^V^ ================== Spooky Cookie Cutter Set Jack O Lantern Canister Cookie Cutter Set Copper Halloween Cookie Cutter Set 4 Piece Grippy Halloween Cookie Cutter Set Comfort Grip Ghost Cookie Cutter Comfort Grip Pumpkin Cookie Cutter Comfort Grip Witch’s Hat Cookie Cutter Wilton 4 Piece Metal Ghost Cookie Cutter Comfort Grip Monster Head Cookie Cutter
