Usually I am not a huge fan of sectional sprinkles, with the amount of baking that I do, I have to buy the larger sized containers in order to get the job done right. Even though I am not a fan of them, I can never ever pass up a bargain. When I hit Michaels for the after season sale I saw a ton of these tossed in a cart along with other Christmas themed baking items. The price, a measly $1.50 a container, for that price could you pass these up? I didnt think so. I knew that these cost at least four dollar at the Wilton Online Store so when I saw them for less than half, I jumped on them. Even though you might think that you can only use these for the holiday, guess again. The red ones are great for Valentines Day, the green for St. Patricks Day and the nonpareils look nice on frosted animal cookies. Alas, the Christmas tree ones are best saved for the actual holiday.
Wilton Christmas Sprinkles Set 710-729
The first thing you need to know about these is that there are several different Christmas sprinkle assortments from Wilton. This can lead to a little bit of confusion if you are ordering them the website so make sure you check your stock of baking items and use the Wilton reference numbers to double check things. Even though I prefer to buy the larger sized containers of sprinkles and colored sugars, I cant pass up a bargain and since these really dont go stale, you can stock up on them after the holiday and tuck them away for next year. About the only thing that could go wrong with these is if they arent stored properly or exposed to high heat or humidity. I keep mine in a large plastic box that protects them from being exposed to humidity, to combat the heat I store the box as far away from the oven as possible and on a bottom shelf [remember, heat rises] so the lower you can store them, the better. These come with a tamper evident seal around the top so if you have trouble with ants, this should work well to keep the little buggers from sniffing out your goods.
So, what exactly do you get with this assortment? Four cool sprinkles that can be used on anything from cakes to ice cream to frosted desserts. The two largest pats of the container [1.1 ounce each] house the red and green colored sugar. These come out of the shaker top nicely but dont over do it when you are dispensing them. You can always add more if they are needed but its a little tricky to try and remove excess sprinkles. You also get one ounce of red, white and green nonpareils, these can be added to almost anything and really help to give treats a festive feel. The last item is the Christmas tree mix [.75 ounce] thats made up of red, white and green jimmies and tiny little green Christmas trees. This assortment is a little on the crunchy side because of the trees but they taste good and look awesome. Since this is a tri-color blend you might get the best results using this on something that is frosted with white cake icing or a white royal icing.
This is the perfect type of item for someone who only bakes on the holidays or wants to have a lot of variety without having to make a ton of different types or shapes of cookies. The colored sugars can be added before baking sugar cookies so they will stick to the dough better but the other two are definitely better when added to frosting or icing. Im not saying that you cant pop these in the oven but they will melt and look like a huge gob of goo when you remove them. Another great thing to do with the Christmas tree mix and nonpareils is to add them to your homemade Rice Crispie Treats. Add these after youve completed the mix and dont over work the mixture or the colors will start to bleed and run. Simply put, it will look like one of Santas elves puked in the baking dish if you over work it.
The colors of the nonpareils and Christmas tree mix dont bleed unless they are sprinkled on something that is really wet or in Jell-O, these arent the best pick for that but they do work great on ice cream. Theyll hold up about ten minutes before the colors start to run, then you are once again dealing with something that looks like elf vomit. These will hold up for at least two days when added to cupcakes, canned frosting and other related icings but once it starts to dry out, the sprinkles will start to flake off. I played around with these to see if they were the same as the Wilton Christmas Mix Sprinkles and they are. I used the red colored sugars for Valentines Day and plan on using the green for St. Patricks Day. The empty cells will be filled with the Christmas tree mix and saved up for the holidays.
The Bottom Line
Chances are that if I saw these at the regular suggested retail price I wouldnt have purchased them unless it was my only alternative and I was pressed for time. Theres nothing wrong with them and I love the containers but when I bake, I bake a lot; too much to be buying these in mass quantities. But for the clearance price of a buck fifty, I couldnt pass them up, and I know that I can always find a use for the containers around the house. These are great for kids to work with because they are made of a hard plastic that is almost indestructible. These have fallen off tables, shelves, been thrown across the room [by me, not them] and not one of them shattered or broke. These also make for a nice gift for someone that does a lot of baking around the holidays. I was the recipient of a huge basket of Christmas stuff a few years ago, it was filled with everything that Id need to make cookies [except eggs and butter] so I decide to make some and take them to work. Someone pulled me aside and said We were hoping youd take the hint and bring us some goodies!. Mission accomplished!
As always, thanks for the read!
